Kahuku's Williams played big on both sides of the ball

Kahuku's Lamone Williams may not get the ball in his hands very often, but he certainly made the most of each opportunity in the Red Raiders' 50-13 win in the OIA Red division title game.

For starters, the 6-foot-3, 283 pound defensive lineman/tight end caught the game's opening touchdown pass, a halfback option from running back Aofaga Wily.

"Actually was surprised the first time they called my number." said Williams of his first score. "It was a difficult pass from Aofaga Wily but I managed to pull that one in."

He then added a third quarter interception of a Trojans' screen pass, his second pick of the year.

"Our coach was yelling from the sideline about the screen," recalled Williams. "As I got upfield i saw the rb sneak out and drop back and then seen the ball coming in the air, reached up and got that ball.

And incidentally, his first interception of the year against Castle? Taken back to the house for six.

Finally, for good measure, quarterback Lasi Livai would find Williams on the play immediately following his interception for a 14 yard score.

"The second touchdown I was glad that they called my number again and it was a longer touchdown, so I was just hoping that I wouldn't drop the ball." laughed Williams.

And if that wasn't already enough, Williams added four tackles and a relentless pass rush as a key component on a defensive line that never allowed Mililani's vaunted passing attack to get going.

"It was a team effort." explained Willams. "My role was to put pressure on the quarterback our coaches came out this week telling us that if we put pressure on the quarterback we would disrupt his game and throw off his throws and stuff."

Kahuku enjoys a first round bye this week, before facing the winner of the Farrington-Kealakehe match up in the Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships.
