Football
League titles, state berths on the line this weekend

It appears opposites do attract.

The thundering ground game of Kahuku will take on the lightning passing of Mililani in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red football championship Friday at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the White champion, which starts at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be aired live on OC16 (Channel 12).

The winner likely secures one of the top two seeds for the Division I state tournament and an opening-round bye.

Kahuku, an original OIA member, will be seeking its second consecutive and 10th OIA title since 2000, 17th since the playoff system and 23rd overall.

Mililani, which started its first varsity season in 1975, will be looking for its second OIA crown, but first on the field. It won the 2010 by forfeit. This is the Trojans' third OIA title appearance; they lost to Kahuku in 2004, 36-13.

The Red East Division champion Red Raiders (9-0), first in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings, rely heavily on the run because they can with running back Aofaga Wily. The tireless senior can secure the ball no matter how many times he carries in a game. He had 40 carries last week against Leilehua.

Meanwhile, the Red West Division champion Trojans (9-1), ranked third, depend on quarterback Jarin Morikawa. His arm is as durable as Wily's legs. Morikawa leads Division I passers with 223 completions, 391 pass attempts, 2,868 passing yards and 32 TDs.

Both teams have linemen that make their offenses go. A sight to behold is Kahuku's 6-foot-2, 432-pound guard Henry Tonga pulling on traps and roll-out pass plays. Mililani's offensive front gives Morikawa time to pick out his receivers; it also is adept at picking up blitzes.

OIA White Championship

Nanakuli (6-3) vs. Radford (9-1), 4:30 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium (OC16)

The fourth-seeded Golden Hawks rallied in the semifinals against Kaiser to get to the title game against the top-seeded Rams.

Radford is looking for its first White title since 2005. This is Nanakuli's first appearance in the White title game. It hasn't won a league crown since 1983.

Both teams have already clinched Division Ii state tournament berths, joining Iolani, Kauai and Lahainaluna.

OIA Red third place

No. 4 Leilehua (7-3) vs. No. 5 Farrington (8-2), 6 p.m. Saturday at Kaiser Stadium

The Mules and Governors will play for third place in the OIA Red tournament and the final Division I state tournament berth.

Save for 2010, since 2007, it's been either Farrington or Leilehua winning the third-place game. In 2010, the third-place game became the battle for the second seed because of Kahuku's forfeit of the title game.

Farrington took a beating on the scoreboard in its loss to Mililani in last week's semifinals, while Leilehua took a physical beating in its loss to Kahuku. The Mules' sustained a number of injuries, including to their QB Justin Jenks.

The game will be streamed live on ScoringLive.

BIIF Division I Championship

Hilo (7-2) at Kealakehe (9-1), 7 p.m. Saturday

Saturday's game was suspended because of the tsunami warning and will resume with 58 seconds left in the second quarter with Kealakehe leading 20-14.

The winner gets the league's Division I state berth.

Others clinching Division I state berths are: Punahou, Kahuku, Mililani and Baldwin.
