More teams closing in on state tournament berths

Three teams will have their tickets to the Division I state tournament scanned this weekend.

Winners of Friday's O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red semifinals will earn state berths, as will the winner of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I championship.

Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I champion Punahou and Maui Interscholastic League Division I Baldwin have each earned one of the six state berths. The sixth berth will be decided Nov. 3, when the losers of Friday's OIA Red semifinals play for third place.

OIA Red Semifinals

No. 4 Farrington (8-1)  vs. No. 3 Mililani (8-1), 4:30 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium (OC 16)

They met in the quarterfinals last season with the Governors prevailing, 25-20.

The Governors will be going against one of the most formidable passers in the league in veteran QB Jarin Morikawa, who leads Division I passers in completions, passing yards and TD passes. Kainoa Wilson, Ekolu Ramos and Erren Jean-Pierre are among the top 11 in receiving yards. Running back Dayton Furuta might not be among the rushing yardage leaders, but when the Trojans are close to the goal line, he's the one they rely on to punch the ball in; he has 11 rushing TDs.

Just the opposite, the Trojans will have to deal with one of the best rushing teams in the state. Running back Abraham Silva leads Division I rushers with 1,172 yards and has scored 14 TDs. The other RB threat is Tyler Taumua, who is fifth with 739 yards with nine TDs.

No. 5 Leilehua (7-2) vs. No. 1 Kahuku (8-0), 7:30 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

They met in last year's semifinals with the Red Raiders winning, 9-7.

The Mules might not be the best-looking team at the party, but they have knack of becoming the life of it. Their foot-on-the-pedal offense keeps defenses with little rest between plays. Quarterback Justin Jenks can pass with the best, having thrown for 1,552 yards and 16 TDs. Some 38 percent of his completions have been to versatile Keoni Piceno, who has rushed the ball 22 times for 84 yards and has passed it six times (completing two).

If their scare from Waianae in last week's quarterfinals was a wake-up call, the Red Raiders might be a beast the rest of the way.

Kahuku's vaunted running game is led by RB Aofaga Wily, who has 1,064 yards and 15 TDs. His quick-style running is the perfect counter to the power of FB Polikapu Liua, who averages 7.8 yards per touch. Their running might be exploited against a Mules' defense that has been vulnerable against the inside run this season.

The player to always watch for Kahuku is all-purpose Kawe Johnson, a safety, receiver and return specialist. The fourth-year starter has a knack for making big plays.

BIIF

Hilo (6-3) at Kealakehe (9-1), 7 p.m. Saturday

The Vikings, under first-year coach David Baldwin (who guided Kamehameha-Hawaii to a D2 title in 2010), are looking for their first league title since 2003. They are probably the closest match to the Waveriders of all BIIF teams. Kealakehe swept both meetings this season, but the Vikings put up the most points against the Waveriders in a 43-29 loss and the closest margin in a 14-6 loss.

The Waveriders are looking for their third consecutive D1 crown under their third different coach. Gary Clark was at the helm in 2010, but Sam Kekuokalani took over last year as an interim coach for Clark. Sam Papalii, who led Kealakehe to BIIF titles in 2004 and 2005, has returned.

ILH

No. 2 Punahou (7-1 overall, 6-0 ILH) vs. No. 6 Kamehameha (6-3, 4-2), 6 p.m. Thursday at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

The Buffanblu have clinched and likely won't play again until Nov. 16, the semifinals of the Division I state tournament.

The Warriors' incentive is to take sole possession of second and to spoil the Buffanblu's perfect league record.

Pac-Five (3-6, 2-4) at No. 10 Iolani (6-3, 3-3)

The Raiders need to win to clinch the Division II title, while a win by the Wolfpack will force a playoff.
