Kamehameha strikes early, often on Damien in 48-20 win

Quarterback Cid Camanse-Stevens had 233 yards in total offense to help No. 7 Kamehameha over Damien, 48-20, Saturday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu interdivisional football at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

Camanse-Stevens had 152 yards passing from 15-of-17 passing and 81 yards rushing on five carries, including three TDs from option keepers for the Division I Warriors (5-3, 3-2).

The mercy rule (35-point differential) was enforced when Kamehameha scored with six minutes, 15 seconds in the third quarter on Kaulana Apelu's 10-yard run that made it 48-13. But the Division II Monarchs (3-5, 0-5) forced the regular clock with 3:06 left in the game when DJ Aumua scored on a four-yard run.

The game was delayed about a half hour in the first half when Kamehameha receiver Avery Amasiu was injured. He was carried off the field to the Damien bench, which was closest to where he was on the ground. He left the stadium by ambulance. The injury was not known.

Kamehameha scored on its first five series of the game to take a commanding 34-0 lead after the first quarter. Turnovers led to two scores.

Camanse-Stevens scored on the first two series on option keepers of 44 yards and 15 yards. Apelu scored the third TD on a seven-yard run. Running back Brandon Kahookele scored on runs of seven and three yards.

Damien finally scored in the second quarter on RB Leeland Lauti's one-yard run to pull his team to 34-7. But Camanse-Stevens scored his third TD on the next series on a one-yard run to make it 41-7 with 4:34 left in the half.

The Monarchs returned the favor by scoring on their next series on Syles Choy's two-yard TD pass to Dustin Munar. The PAT failed and it was 41-13 at the half.

Apelu's TD in the third quarter set the running clock, which went back to regular time after Aumua's score in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors used three different quarterbacks and threw to 10 different receivers with seven different players rushing the ball.

Choy passed for 170 yards and rushed for 33 more for Damien.
