Ever the team player, Kawe Johnson is quick to give much of the credit to his Kahuku teammates in the Red Raiders convincing 31-6 win over then-No. 3 Farrington, but clearly the 5-foot-8 all-purpose senior was a major contributor on both sides of the ball.
"I was just doing my part. Everyone on the field was just doing their part, I just had to do mine." said Johnson. "The defense got ten other players (and myself), and they all did their job."
And following a Farrington inteception that set the Govs up at its own 5, the Kahuku defense did their job to near-perfection, forcing Farrington into a third-and-long situation, setting up what was a key turning point in the contest.
As Govs quarterback Montana Liana released the pass headed to the flats on the left side, Johnson broke on the route, snagging the pass in stride and trotted into the endzone for the Red Raiders' first score.
"It was a down and distance, third-and-long, and usually on film they came out with their first pass, a stop route," remarked Johnson on his thought process before the snap. "And I just tried to bait it, and sure enough, 1-2-3 he threw the ball, and I was right there."
The nine-yard interception return for touchdown in the opening moments set the tempo for the game, and for the game Johnson would pad his defensive stat line with 8 tackles and a forced fumble as well.
He also made his presence felt on offense as well, chipping in 2 catches for 36 yards, one of them a pretty 16 yard strike from Lasi Livai for a fourth quarter score that helped put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.
Kahuku closes out the regular season with a trip to Moanalua Friday.
