Waianae-Mililani opens up Red division play Friday

The Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference opens regular-season play this weekend with six games on the slate. Friday's trio is highlighted by a Western Division tilt between visiting Waianae and Mililani at John Kauinana Stadium, while a pair of unbeatens in Aiea and Campbell square-off Saturday in Ewa Beach.

The two teams many consider the front-runners in the East and West - Kahuku and Leilehua, respectively - have byes this week. Here is a closer look at each OIA Red game:

McKinley vs. Kaimuki - Friday, 7 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium

The Tigers (0-1) and Bulldogs (0-2) both moved up from the White Conference last season and are both searching for their first win of this season. McKinley did not play in week one and was shutout Friday by Kapolei, 21-0. The Tigers struggled offensively with just 150 total yards from scrimmage. Kaimuki's struggles have been on both sides of the ball: its offense scores an average of just 13.5 points (224.5 yards) while its defense has allowed 42 points  (362 yards) per game. Quarterback Kainalu Spencer threw for 190 yards on 11-of-19 passing in a 31-21 loss to Damien Friday. He passed for three touchdowns, including two to Zac Bastatas, but also was intercepted three times in the loss.

Moanalua vs. Kailua - Friday, 7 p.m. at Kailua Field

These squads have a few things in common: both wear blue and white and both are still winless. Na Menehune (0-2) have battled a pair of Red West foes in Mililani (31-21) and Waianae (26-17) in a tough early-season stretch. Starting quarterback Maxwell Fiatoa went down with an injury at Mililani, leaving Micah Kaneshiro to fill the void. Defensively, Moanalua is allowing 223 pass yards and four touchdowns per game by its opponents. The Surfriders (0-2) struggles are apparent on the offensive side of the ball: they have scored just 10 points this season and averaging just 133.5 yards from scrimmage. Despite, a combined deficit of 13 points in its two losses, Kailua's defense has been shredded for 203 rushing yards per game.

Waianae vs. Mililani - Friday, 7 p.m. at John Kauinana Stadium (OC16)

The Seariders (1-1) rebounded from a 37-23 loss to Farrington in week one with a 26-17 win at Moanalua Friday. Quarterback Kekoa Kaluhiokalani has completed 53 percent (26 of 49) of his passes for 304 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He scored on an 18-yard run and hit Pookela Nakamoto for a 22-yard touchdown pass against Moanalua. The Trojans (2-0), who are coming off a 35-7 rout of Pac-Five Friday, open the Red West with Waianae, Leilehua and Campbell in consecutive weeks before a bye in week six. Jarin Morikawa leads all Division I quarterbacks with 464 yards and five passing touchdowns. Place-kicker Mark Matas has made all nine of his extra-point attempts.

Castle vs. Farrington - Saturday, 5 p.m. at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium

The Knights (0-2) and Govs (2-0) are on opposite ends of the spectrum for now. Castle has been routed twice in as many weeks by Kamehameha (30-7) and Aiea (32-6). The Knights average just 81 yards of total offense, including minus 13.5 rushing, and under a touchdown (6.5 points) per game. Meanwhile, Farrington has managed wins against a pair of upper-tier programs in Waianae (37-23) and Saint Louis (39-33). Running back Abraham Silva rumbled for 212 yards and two touchdowns against Waianae and went for 167 yards and three scores against Saint Louis.

Kapolei vs. Waipahu - Saturday, 6 p.m. at Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex

The Hurricanes (2-0) have looked impressive through two non-league victories: a 28-7 win over Pearl City and a 21-0 shutout of McKinley. Defensive back Mason Alfaro had a 53-yard pick-six against and running back Mana Reis scored twice on rushes against the Tigers. Defensively, Kapolei has allowed just 142 yards per game, including an average of 30.5 rushing yards by opponents. The Marauders (0-2) are the lone winless team in the Red West, but have played a pair of tight games in losses to Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II teams Pac-Five (26-13) and Iolani (35-34). Waipahu held a 26-14 lead after three quarters against the Raiders Saturday, but Iolani rallied with 21 fourth-quarter points to win.

Aiea vs. Campbell - Saturday, 6 p.m. at Campbell Field

Na Alii (2-0) have proved to be prolific offensively (averaging 374 yards and 42.5 points per contest) and formidable defensively (allowing an average of just 85 yards and six points by its opponents). Aiea dominated Castle last week, racking up 356 offensive yards while allowing just 33 by the Knights. Running back Mana Kaahanui had three rushing touchdowns and Jae Won Huh converted a pair of field goals in the win. The Sabers (2-0) are coming off a 13-7 road victory at Kailua Friday, in which it pounded out 379 offensive yards, including 241 rushing. Defensively, Campbell is allowing a slim 32.5 rushing yards and under a touchdown (6.5 points) per game by its opponents.
