Punahou still unbeaten in Kang Invitational


Punahou finished pool play at a perfect 6-0 yesterday at the Ann Kang Invitational Girls Volleyball Tournament at 'Iolani School.

The Buffanblu swept Santa Monica (Calif.), 25-10, 25-15, Kahuku, 27-25, 25-13, and perennial California power Redondo Union, 25-21, 25-15.

Branson (Calif.) is the only other team in the 16-school field to finish 6-0 in two days of pool play. Branson swept Pomona (Calif.) Catholic, 25-12, 25-10, Kaiser, 25-20, 25-18, and Oaks Christian (Calif.), 25-22, 25-23.

'Iolani won its pool despite being losing a thriller to Moanalua, 20-25, 25-20, 16-14. 'Iolani outlasted Mid-Pacific, 19-25, 25-9, 15-8, and swept Los Alamitos, 25-15, 25-21.

Chaminade won the fourth pool, squeaking past Hawai'i Baptist, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13, sweeping Castle, 25-17, 25-18, and holding off Rim of the World (Calif.), 25-23, 25-23.

In other action, Castle edged HBA, 21-25, 25-14, 25-14, but lost to Rim of the World, 25-19, 25-14. MPI swept Moanalua, 25-18, 25-21, but lost to Los Alamitos, 25-16, 25-17.

Los Alamitos also swept Moanalua, 25-19, 25-20.

Kaiser rallied past Pomona Catholic, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8, but lost to Oaks Christian, 25-18, 25-23.

Also yesterday: Redondo Union def. Kahuku, 25-17, 25-12 and Santa Monica, 25-13, 25-22; Santa Monica swept Kahuku, 25-14, 25-19; Oaks Christian def. Pomona Catholic, 25-12, 25-12; and Chaminade held off Rim of the World, 25-23, 25-13. 

Today's final day will feature semifinals and finals at 'Iolani's Lower and Upper Gyms:

8 a.m.: Copper Bracket semifinals -- Kaiser vs. HBA (Lower), Castle vs. Pomona Catholic (Upper)

9 a.m.: Bronze Bracket semifinals -- Branson vs. Rim of the World (Lower), Chaminade vs. Oaks Christian (Upper)

10 a.m.: Copper final -- Kaiser-HBA winner vs. Castle-Pomona Catholic winner (Lower); Copper 3rd place -- Kaiser-HBA loser vs. Castle-Pomona Catholic loser (Upper)

11 a.m.: Bronze final -- Branson/Rim of the World winner vs. Chaminade/Oaks Christian winner (Lower); Bronze third place -- Branson/Rim of the World loser vs. Chaminade/Oaks Christian loser (Upper)

Noon: Silver Bracket semifinals -- Kahuku vs. Moanalua (Lower), MPI vs. Santa Monica (Upper)

1 p.m.: Gold Bracket semifinals -- Punahou vs. Los Alamitos (Lower), 'Iolani vs. Redondo Union (Upper)

2 p.m.: Silver final -- Kahuku/Moanalua winner vs. MPI/Santa Monica winner; Silver third place -- Kahuku/Moanalua loser vs. MPI/Santa Monica loser
