Kalani wins tourney opener over Waiakea, 4-0


 





Kalani exploded for four goals in the second half yesterday to rout Waiakea, 4-0, in the first round of the�Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Championships.

The Falcons, who finished third in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, improved to 13-1 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 2-seeded Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ Punahou (8-2) in today's 7 p.m. quarterfinal at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Kazuto Moribe knocked a penalty kick into the lower right corner of the net in the 48th minute to make it 1-0. Scott Manago followed with another goal in the 63rd minute and Leo Klink effectively sealed the victory with a 78th-minute score.

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation Warriors fell to 9-6-1 and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game against Moanalua (9-4-2).

Pearl City 3, Lahainaluna 1

Tyler Terashima and George Georgiev knocked home goals in a two-minute span midway through the first half to help the Chargers take a 2-0 lead. After the Lunas' Christian Cardenas-Ayala cut the lead in half with a goal in the 50th minute, Pearl City's Christian Nakabayashi scored an insurance goal in the 70th minute.

Pearl City (11-4) will face No. 1 seed and OIA champion Mililani (12-0-1) in today's 5 p.m. quarterfinal.

Lahainaluna, the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up, fell to 10-4-1 and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game vs. 'Aiea (8-6-1).

Freshman Max Ching's header in the 56th minute�off Kasey Chun's corner kick was the only score as the ILH runner-up Raiders (8-1-2) advanced to face No. 4 seed and BIIF champion Kealakehe in today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal.

Kapolei 2, Moanalua 0

Reynaldo Arellano scored in the 20th minute and Archie Ryales added another goal 12 minutes later to lift the OIA runner-up Hurricanes into today's 1 p.m. quarterfinal vs. No. 3 seed and MIL champ Baldwin (11-3).
