Maryknoll sank 7 of 10 free throws in overtime and finished the game with a 10-3 run tonight to knock off visiting 'Iolani, 47-40, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball action.

Both teams are now 1-1 in the ILH, behind Academy of the Pacific (2-0), University High and Saint Louis (both 1-0).

"The ILH is so damned tough," said Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant, who is in his first season guiding his alma mater after six years leading Kaimuki. "We played horrible the other night (in a 54-35 loss at Kamehameha), but did a good job tonight staying out of the trap and breaking through the double team. That opens up the backside, and our eyes were up so we could make the pass."

After leading an extremely low-scoring first half, 10-9, 'Iolani opened it up to 26-17 after Austin O'Leary's 3-pointer with 2:41 remaining in the third period. But the Spartans responded with a 9-0 run spanning into the fourth and later took a 31-28 lead on freshman Kaleb Gilmore's alley-oop layup with 3:18 left.

O'Leary then tied it up again at 31-31 with a 3-pointer 17 seconds later, and the Raiders went up, 33-31, on Gabriel Vega's layup off a baseline spin move with 42 seconds remaining. But Vega missed the ensuing free throw, and after 'Iolani later regained possession, Joshua Burnett made a steal and sank two free throws with 17 ticks on the clock.

The Raiders then advanced the ball into the front court but turned it over again with 0:05 showing, and Maryknoll was able to get a driving layup attempt but lost control of the ball on the way up, forcing overtime.

Gilmore drained a 3-pointer to break a 37-37 tie with 1:48 remaining in the extra period and sank two free throws 15 seconds later to make it 41-37, but Duke Pauli scored on a putback to close it to 41-39 with 1:08 left.

Tobi Shramm's two free throws then put the Spartans up, 43-39, at the 32-second mark, but he fouled out eight ticks later and Vega split his pair from the charity stripe to make it 43-40.

But Gilmore swished two free throws after being fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and 'Iolani missed a jumper and putback attempt on the next possession, then failed to score again after two missed free throws.

Austin Gaskins capped off the victory with a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.

"We told our guys that there are going to be swings during the game, but they cannot get frazzled," Grant said. "Earlier this season, when the other team made a big run, we would try to come back by playing too much one-on-one. When we get in that situation, we need to be more team-oriented. They did a better job tonight."

Gilmore led Maryknoll with 14 points and Shramm added 10 points.

Vega led all scorers with 20 points and added 12 rebounds and four steals.
