No. 4 Montrose Christian highlights 'Iolani Classic






Perennial national powerhouse Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.), ranked No. 4 in the latest ESPN Rise/Powerade Fab 50, highlights the 28th Annual 'Iolani Prep Classic boys basketball tournament which tips off today.

First round action starts at 5 p.m. with Kalani vs. No. 31 Westbury Christian (Houston), followed by Lincoln (San Diego) vs. Tsinghua (Beijing) at 6:30 and defending state champion Kamehameha vs. Orlando (Fla.) Christian at 8.

The first round continues tomorrow with 'Iolani vs. Kaimuki at 2 p.m., Kamehameha-Hawai'i vs. Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) at 3:30, Kahuku vs. Fairfax (Los Angeles) at 5, Farrington vs. No. 30 De La Salle at 6:30 and Academy of the Pacific vs. Montrose Christian at 8.

All games will be at 'Iolani's lower gym.

The tournament takes a day off on Sunday and resumes with quarterfinal and consolation bracket action on Monday; the popular slam dunk contest will be held after the 8 o'clock game that night. The semifinals are set for Tuesday with the championship on Wednesday.

Montrose Christian returns seven players from a team that finished last season as ESPN Rise National Champion, including four-year letterman Justin Anderson, a versatile 6-foot-7 forward.

De La Salle features Division I college prospects in point guard Amadi Udeny and shooting guard Elliott Pitts.

Westbury Christian returns three key players from a team that finished 37-2 last season, including Delvin Dickerson, a 6-6 forward who has committed to South Alabama.

Lincoln returns three key players from a team that went 31-2 and finished second in last season's state playoffs, including senior guards Tyree and Tyrell Robinson, both of whom are being recruited by Arizona and UCLA, among other Division I colleges.

Bishop O'Dowd returns three starters from a team that finished second in last season's Division III state playoffs, including senior Richard Longrus, a 6-6 forward who signed with Washington State.

Fairfax features three key returnees in addition to senior Taj Adams, a 6-7 forward who has signed with Loyola Marymount.

Orlando Christian returns two key players from a team that went 24-6 and won its conference last season, including senior Jordan Montgomery, a 6-3 guard who has signed with Kennesaw State.

Tsinghua has won the past five national championships and features junior Pengbo Wu, who is regarded as the best point guard in China.

Kamehameha features standout guard Dyrbe Enos, a three-year starter.

'Iolani returns 6-7 center Gabriel Vega, who has signed on to play volleyball at Stanford.

AOP returns three players from a team that finished third in last year's state tournament, and added junior guard Shai Brown, who started at Roosevelt last season.
