Kamehameha rallies past surprising Baldwin, 62-60

Makana Harrison sank two free throws with 12 seconds remaining last night to lift defending boys basketball state champion Kamehameha to a 62-60 victory over surprising Baldwin in the first round of the 13th Annual James Alegre Invitational.

The Warriors, playing under new coach Julian Nakanishi, will face Interscholastic League of Honolulu rival Mid-Pacific in tonight's 7:30 feature semifinal at Radford's Alegre Gym.

Reigning Division II state champ Farrington will play two-time defeding O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference champion Moanalua in the other semifinal at 6.

In consolation bracket games, Leilehua will face Pearl City at 3 p.m. followed by Baldwin vs. Radford at 4:30.

Baldwin, runner-up in the Maui Interscholastic League last season, led Kamehameha 60-54 after two free throws by Gabriel Ross with 2:36 left. But Zerin Parker answered with two free throws 12 seconds later, and the Warriors closed it to 60-58 after Dyrbe Enos' two free throws with 2:01 remaining.

Enos then tied it on a driving, scooping layup with 58 seconds left, and Kamehameha forced a turnover on the Bears' next possession which led to Harrison being fouled near the Baldwin lane.

After Harrison swished both free throws, the Bears worked the ball upcourt and to Kody Takushi in the right corner. Takushi's 3-point attempt glanced off the rim and the Warriors were able to secure the rebound and dribble out the clock.

Kamehameha had jumped out to a 13-2 lead to begin the game and was up, 23-11, after Gavin Legrange's reverse with 5:39 remaining in the second period. But Baldwin clawed back and eventually closed it to 30-27 on Jeremiah Badillo's 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the half before Makoa Camanse-Stevens sank three free throws 10 seconds later to make it 33-27 at the break.

The Warriors pushed the lead to 44-34 three minutes into the second half on Gerard Austin's 3-pointer, but the Bears again clawed back and closed it to 48-47 after Ross' free throw at the end of the third quarter.

Baldwin then took its first lead at 49-48 after Bradley Bowlin's two free throws 38 seconds into the fourth.

Enos drained a 3 two minutes into the period to put Kamehameha back up at 51-50, but Bowlin tied it with a free throw 44 seconds later and then dropped in back-to-back layups to make it 55-51 with 4:17 remaining.

After JT Campbell responded with a 3-pointer 14 seconds later to close it to 55-54, the Bears converted 5 of 6 free throws to push the lead to 60-54.

Enos finished with a game-high 18 points. Bowlin had 17 points to lead Baldwin and Ross added 10 points.

Mid-Pacific 53, Radford 49

Ryan Swanson scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Owls, who led 35-19 at halftime and held off a second-half rally by the Rams.

Viane Vaina scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Governors, who trailed 11-4 after the first period but rebounded to take a 19-17 lead at halftime.

They extended the lead to 32-23 after three periods before holding off the Chargers in the fourth. Reymart Rosario led Pearl City with 11 points.

Moanalua 43, Leilehua 42
