Boys Basketball
Hopkins named head coach at MPI

Coach Jason Hopkins has been named head coach of the boys basketball program at MPI. Hopkins comes to Mid-Pacific after spending last year coaching college basketball at Cochise College in Arizona, helping the Apaches reach the National Tournament and win a Region One National Junior College Championship.

Born in Honolulu, Coach Hopkins grew up in Edmonds, WA, and attended Madrona K-8 from kindergarten through middle school, where current Mid-Pacific President Joe Rice was the principal at the time.

Prior to his coaching career, Hopkins played for the Cochise College Running Apaches, on a full athletic scholarship. He was a member of the Apaches fifth Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Championship team. After Cochise he went on to receive another scholarship to Lipscomb University and played two years at the Division One level. After Lipscomb, he returned to his roots and helped lead Cochise to a 24-8 record and a runner up finish in the region, this time as a coach.

The next year and a half, Hopkins played professionally in the U.S. minor leagues and in China and he coached at Roosevelt High School in Seattle.

"We are excited to have Jason as our new boys head coach" said Athletic Director Jo Ito. "I am confident that we have found the right person to fill Coach Hu's shoes. Jason's wide-ranging basketball experience coupled with his passion for the sport will have a great impact on our program."
