MILILANI - With running back Zachary Payomo leading the way, Mililani pounded out 436 yards of total offense - including 331 rushing - to beat Iolani, 43-23, in a non-league game Friday night.

A crowd of about 1,800 fans at the Trojans' John Kauinana Stadium - along with a statewide audience on OC16 - watched the hosts improve to 2-0 while the Raiders fell to 1-1. It was the second straight win for Mililani over a Division II opponent. The Trojans, from the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Red West Conference, beat OIA White-member Kaimuki last week. Iolani is the defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu and state Division II state champions.

"We're 2-0, but it doesn't matter," Mililani head coach Rod York said. "The real season, the part that counts, it starts now and we still have a lot of work to do. Against Iolani, we were able to do what we wanted to do, but we also made a lot of mistakes."

York, an Iolani alum, was critical of his second team - which played most of the second half - but pleased with both starting units.

"We executed our game plans and took care of the ball offensively," York said. "Our offensive line played great, opened up some nice holes for our backs and our defense played well also, but we have to get our no. 2's up to speed."

Mililani opened the game with 37 unanswered points before Iolani scored late in the third quarter.

The Trojans got on the board with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Trent McKinney to 6-foot-4 receiver Hassan Richardson midway through the first quarter and early in the second, fullback Reid Watanabe busted into the end zone on a 5-yard run to make it 14-0.

Payomo set-up Mililani's next score with a 42-yard run down to the Raiders' 15-yard line and three plays later McKinney found Ervan Jean-Pierre, another 6-4 receiver, on a fade-stop route for a 3-yard TD pass.

Iolani drove to the Mililani 1-yard line on its ensuing drive, but linebacker Cilvin Steward tackled Jordan Lee for a 3-yard loss on fourth-and-goal. McKinney and the Trojans then put together a nine-play, 96-yard drive that was capped by another TD pass to Jean-Pierre, this time on a 9-yard fade stop along the left sideline. Elizabeth Gustafson converted the PAT to give her team a 28-0 halftime lead.

Mililani got a 33-yard field goal from Jarin Morikawa in the third quarter on a drive that was extended by a muffed Iolani punt return - its second of the game. Iolani then muffed the kickoff return and Matt Padaca recovered the loose ball for the Trojans on the Raiders' 44.

After a McKinney incompletion on first down, Payomo carried on three consecutive plays for 43 yards before punching in a 1-yard score following the block of Watanabe.

"We have trust in our O-line that they can get the job done," Payomo said, who finished with 256 yards on 28 attempts. "They opened up some big holes for me tonight and we were able to pound the ball."

The Raiders found success behind backup quarterback Reece Foy late in the game. Foy connected with Tanner Nishioka on a 65-yard touchdown pass with 2:22 left in the third quarter. The kick was no good, but Nishioka recovered the ensuing onside kick and on the very next play, Kasey Takahashi hauled in a 32-yard TD pass from Foy. The two-point conversion was good and Iolani trailed 37-14 after three quarters.

McKinney padded the Trojans' lead with a 1-yard quarterback sneak to make it 43-14. Foy tossed a 27-yard scoring strike to Bret Christman later in the quarter and the Raiders got a safety after the Trojans recovered an offensive fumble in their own end zone to close out the scoring.

Mililani racked up 28 first down, including 19 by rush. The Trojans averaged nearly 7.2 yards per run and held the Raiders' offense to just 3-of-15 third-down conversions.

"Mililani is a good football team with a lot of weapons on offense and a quick and aggressive defense," Raiders' coach Wendell Look said.
