Moanalua sweeps Kalani, Farrington in East opener

Two-time defending White champion Moanalua made its Red debut with a sweep of Kalani and Farrington Thursday night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association East season opener at the Richard Kitamura Memorial Field House.

Na Menehune beat the Falcons, 25-16, 25-18, then dominated the Governors, 25-6, 25-11.

In the other match, Kalani swept Farrington, 25-15, 25-9.

"It was a good opportunity for us to get to use everybody," said Moanalua's Doug Hee, in his 25th season of coaching.

The Governors' inexperience was evident, as they struggled in nearly all phases. Their lack of passing made it hard for them to set up any kind of attack against the experienced Na Menehune. Moanalua had 8-0 and 5-0 runs in their first set rout. They had 5-0 and 7-0 runs in the second set.

Moanalua was able to clear its bench, giving their two freshmen - Sixto Amian and Drake Fukushima - playing time. Fukushima, a 4-foot-10 defensive specialist, had one of the better digs on the night that resulted in match point.

Na Menehune will face their true test Saturday when they play at defending OIA Red champion Roosevelt.
