Kailua, Moanalua share East title

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association has finally put closure to the controversy surrounding the Kahuku football team's forfeits last season for using an ineligible player.

The league determined from a self-report by Kahuku that the Red Raiders used the ineligible player in games against Moanalua, Roosevelt and Kaiser, as well as OIA Red quarterfinals against Radford and semifinals against Leilehua. Kahuku had won all of those games. It then forfeited the title game against Mililani before it was played.

With Kahuku's regular season record dropping from 6-0 to 3-3, Kailua (4-2) and Moanalua (3-3 to 4-2) are deemed Eastern Division co-champions, OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka said.

The revised East standings look like this:

Kailua 4-2
Moanalua 4-2
Roosevelt 3-3 (2-1)
Kahuku 3-3 (2-1)
Castle  3-3 (1-2)
Farrington 3-3 (1-2)
Kaiser 1-5

The records in parentheses are head-to-head records against the teams tied for third. Roosevelt and Kahuku each was 2-1 against the tied teams, while Castle and Farrington were 1-2. The next tie-breaker is head-to-head. Roosevelt's forfeit win against Kahuku places it third, while Castle's win against Farrington makes it fifth.
