EWA BEACH - Farrington's defense performed in midseason form in its season opener in beating host Campbell, 26-7, Friday night.

Three of the Governors' five scores came off turnovers. Leland Mitchell's interception off Justin Tago on the Sabers' first offensive series led to quarterback Jared Hakuole's eight-yard TD run. An interception in the end zone by Daniel Prescott off Tago made it 14-0 with one minute, 22 seconds in the first quarter and a fourth-quarter interception by Paul Solomon set up Andrew Gangloff's 30-yard field goal.

"Offensively, we're very young," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "Justin is just a 10th grader; we brought him up from the JV. He had a good summer, but I guess when there's real pressure, you have to get used to it. We had some open looks, but we couldn't connect on those."

It was a mismatch for a sophomore up from the junior varsity against one of the best defenses of last season. But senior Nilo Agbayani-Omalza didn't fare any better, throwing two interceptions, too.

"We have five returning starters from last year," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "They bring that experience to our team."

After Jared Hakuole's run and Prescott's pick in the end zone, Hakuole connected with Jordan Hakuole on a four-yard TD pass with 1:22 left in the half to give Farrington a commanding 20-0 lead.

The Sabers (0-1) hinted at chipping away their deficit when they scored on their first series to start the third quarter. Tago hit BJ Halmos on a 20-yard TD pass on a deep fade to the left side to pull to 20-7.

But Farrington (1-0) responded with a 36-yard field goal from Andrew Gangloff to make it 23-7. But the Sabers did nothing in their four series; Gangloff added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to make it 26-7.

Backup running back Scotland Smith led are rushers with 90 yards on 11 carries. He got the call when Tyler Taumua got injured, Okimoto said.

"You have to start off the season with a good game," Governors' linebacker Lance Williams said. "We have to keep the tempo high."
