KAPOLEI - Farrington squandered a 17-point lead in the third quarter, but was saved by Kirsten-Marie Liana's three-point play to tie the game at 50 with 49 seconds left in regulation to stun West champion Kapolei, 59-50, in overtime Friday night in a championship bracket semifinal of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red girls' basketball tournament at the Hurricanes' gym.

The East runner-up Governors (12-2) will host East fifth place Kahuku (8-7), 6 p.m. Jan. 20 in the championship bracket for the last of the undefeated teams. The winner advances to the Jan. 27 tournament championship and will have another shot again Jan. 29 if it loses.

Consolation bracket games 6 p.m. Jan. 19, Kapolei will travel to Kaiser and Kaimuki will host Pearl City.

Friday night, Kaiser beat Campbell, 77-61, and Pearl City beat Roosevelt, 46-29. The Cougars and Chargers have earned the OIA's final two Division I state berths, while the Sabers and Rough Riders are done for the season.

Down 50-46 with 1:12 left in regulation, Koleti (Seke) Siliga made the back end of two free throw tries to pull the Govs to within two. After Kapolei's inbound, Liana stole the ball in Kapolei's backcourt scored and was fouled. She completed the three-point play to tie the game at 50.

"There were a lot of things going on in my head, but I knew I just had to finish hard," Liana said. "When I got that steal, I went to the basket."

After Kapolei's inbound, Toe Motu took a long pass near her free throw line, but not only missed a layup, but was called for traveling, turning the ball over to Farrington with 42 seconds left. Farrington brought the ball down court and called time with 19 seconds left. When play resumed, Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo's missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left and Kapolei fell short on a long-range, prayer shot that led to overtime.

The Governors, who were contained to two field goals in their seven-point fourth quarter, jumped to a 52-50 lead in OT on Siliga's putback with 2:49 left and made it 53-50 with 2:18 left on Diena Petersen's free throw.

Liana fouled out with 1:55 left, but Kaity Wills only managed one of her two free throws to pull the Hurricanes to within two. But Farrington made four of their next six free throws to cushion their lead to 57-51 with 18 seconds left. Each added a field goal to round out the scoring.

Despite losing Liana in the closing 1:55, her replacement, Siliga, didn't miss a beat, Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu said.

"Kirsten was a big factor for us in the post," Tatupu said. "With her fouling out was a big negative on our side. But our post (Siliga) who went in for her stepped it up. She did her best to pick up the slack."

The Governors led 39-22 early in the third quarter before the Hurricanes chipped their deficit to 43-33 entering the fourth quarter. Kapolei eventually pulled to within 43-41 and 45-43 with 4:04 left.

The Hurricanes finally took the lead for the first time on Krystal Jacobs' 3-pointer with 3:26 left in the quarter.

With 2:27 left left, Jacobs stole the ball near mid-court and drove to the hoop to increase the Hurricanes' lead to 48-45. They eventually made it 50-46 before the Govs rallied to tie the game on Liana's three-point play.

"It just couldn't drop," Tatupu said of her team's shots in the fourth quarter. "Sometimes you have those games, no matter how open your shots are. Fortunately, the girls didn't give up. They kept plugging and pushing. It came out in the end."
