Fresh off a humbling experience at last weekend's 'Iolani Prep Classic, Farrington bounced back in a big way Tuesday night to deny visiting Kaiser, 64-51, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball showdown.

The Governors improved to 6-0 in league play and gained sole possession of first place in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. The upstart Cougars fell to 5-1.

Farrington was jolted off its track a bit against top-level competition at the 'Iolani Classic, losing all three of its tournament games by an aggregate score of 195 to 105. That included a 72-24 loss to Brea (Calif.) Olinda, ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN Rise, and a 64-39 defeat vs. Incarnate Word (St. Louis), Missouri's defending state champion which finished last season at 30-1 and ranked No. 10 by ESPN Rise.

"We learned a pretty good lesson, we realized how many mistakes we were making against OIA competition," said Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo, the Govs' All-State senior guard who scored a game-high 23 points to go with six rebounds Tuesday night. "But we knew we had another challenge coming up tonight, and I'm glad we pulled through. We expected Kaiser to bring their 'A' game."

Farrington did not allow the Cougars to capitalize on the "trap game" opportunity, jumping to an 11-3 lead early and holding off several Kaiser comeback attempts.

After Mele Adams sank a pair of free throws to close it to 11-7 two seconds before the first period ended, the Governors opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups by Tatupu-Leopoldo and Koleti Siliga and later went on an 8-1 run capped by Ashley Savusa's 3-pointer to take a 25-14 lead with 2:06 remaining in the first half.

Farrington then extended it to 44-30 after three periods and built the lead to 56-34 midway through the fourth before the Cougars staged one final rally.

Darcey Goulsby's jumper capped a 17-5 run that closed it to 61-51 with 1:45 left, but the Govs sealed the victory by draining three of four free throws in the final 1:24.

Farrington was 24 of 30 (80 percent) from the free throw line overall, including 11 of 13 (84.6 percent) in the fourth quarter.

"We shot our free throws pretty well, thankfully," Governors coach Caroline Tatupu said. "Our performance at the 'Iolani Classic bruised our self-esteem a little, but the girls stepped up tonight and played well."

Kirsten Liana added 11 points and seven rebounds for Farrington and Leilani Mageo-Pacheco contributed 10 points.

Adams and Makana Borden each scored 12 points to lead Kaiser.
