Konawaena holds off Bay Area power for 3rd place

Lia Galdeira scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made four steals Saturday night to help Konawaena hold off Bay Area powerhouse Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), 46-42, for third place in the 'Iolani Prep Classic.

The defending state runner-up Wildcats went 2-1 in the three-day tournament, including a 52-45 upset of Missouri state champion Incarnate Word on Thursday. Their only loss was to No. 2-ranked Brea (San Jose) Olinda, 69-42, on Friday.

"It was pretty awesome, to play against teams of this caliber day after day," Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa said. "I think this will help us when the state tournament comes around."

Archbishop Mitty has four top returnees from a team went 26-6 and won its conference last season. The Monarchs lost to No. 6-ranked Memphis (Tenn.) Central, 55-52, on Friday.

Konawaena led wire-to-wire on Saturday, after junior All-State point guard Dawnyelle Awa made a steal and layup to start the game.

The Wildcats led 16-10 after one period and 26-20 at the half, before Archbishop Mitty cut it to 33-30 entering the fourth. The Monarchs closed it to 38-37 on Ashley Watson's running bank shot down the middle of the lane with 3:23 remaining, but Konawaena answered with back-to-back layups from Galdeira and Staysha Galigo and Dawnyelle Awa sank four of six free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

"They're very scrappy and they attack the basket well as a team," Archbishop Mitty coach Sue Phillips said. "What makes them a great team is not just (Galdeira and Awa), but also their other players. They would do good (in San Jose)."

Anuhea Wall and Thea Hanato-Smith each contributed seven points, Galigo added six points and Awa finished with six points, three steals and three assists. Wall, at 5 feet 9, showed her court savvy with nifty moves against Monarchs post Vanessa Leo (6-4), who had just four points.

"I thought Anu did a great job taking their big girl out of the game," Bobbie Awa said. "She had a real steady tournament. And Staysha and Courtney (Kaupu, four points) gave us great minutes off the bench, they played good defense and deserved to be in there."

Watson led Archbishop Mitty with 14 points.
