Ma'a outstanding for Kamehameha

Long known as the daughter of University of Hawai'i volleyball greats Pono Ma'a and Lisa Strand, Misty Ma'a is quickly making a name for herself.

The Kamehameha outside hitter/opposite smashed 18 kills, made five blocks and had eight digs Saturday night to help the Warriors hold off Punahou, 25-13, 12-25, 25-15, 25-18, for their sixth straight New City Nissan/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association State Championship at Pukalani, Maui.

The night before, Ma'a had 11 kills as Kamehameha swept Waiakea, 25-15, 25-12, 21. In Thursday's quarterfinals, Ma'a had 12 kills in the Warriors' 25-16, 23-25, 25-10, 28-26 victory over O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku, and in Wednesday's tournament opener Ma'a had 11 kills and four blocks to help Kamehameha sweep Pearl City, 25-12, 25-12, 25-17.

Ma'a, a 6-foot-1 junior, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after the final match.
