Kalaheo outlasts Waimea in 5 sets

In an opening round match at the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball Division II State Championships, Jowell Guerreiro had 25 kills and Ashlyn Anduha added 20 as Kalaheo rallied in the fifth set to pull out a 25-22, 16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13 victory over Waimea at McKinley.

Kalaheo fell behind 5-0 in the fifth after a hitting error and two kills apiece by Brandee Victorino and Tatiana Rita. The Mustangs chipped away and tied it at 9-9 on a hitting error and took the lead on an ace by Kelsey Wemple. The match was tied at 10, 12 and 13, before kills by Anduha and Guerreiro won it for Kalaheo.

Wemple finished with five kills, four aces and four blocks for Kalaheo.

Waimea was led by Jayme Jacinto, who finished with 25 kills. Victorino added 13 kills, seven blocks and three aces.

The first set was tied at 22-22, before a hitting error, ace by Jade Alexander and kill by Paris Bell won it for the Mustangs.

The Menehunes scored 19 of the final 26 points in the second set to win going away. Victorino and Jacinto each had four kills for Waimea in the set.

Waimea pulled out the third in dramatic fashion, scoring the final five points of the set. The Mustangs had three hitting errors, Jacinto and Victorino had a double block, and Jacinto had a kill on set point. Jacinto had nine kills without an error in the set.

In the fourth, Kalaheo went on a 7-3 run to take a 22-18 lead. The Mustangs ended it on a kill by Bell.
