Yamada, Patacsil win OIA crowns

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS - The Western Division swept the O'ahu Interscholastic Association team titles, but the individual crowns went to Eastern Division bowlers.

Kapolei's girls won their first team championship, rolling a six-game series total of 4,980, while Pearl City's boys captured their first team title since 1997 by downing 5,643 pins Thursday at the Schofield Bowling Center.

Kalani senior Brianne Yamada won the girls' individual title with 1,180 pins, just beating out Kapolei's Christalynn Bonafacio's 1,174.

"I was hoping I'd place," said Yamada, who added she didn't even place at last year's OIA meet.

Despite her success, her Falcons did not even have a chance to defend their team title because Kalani had just two bowlers. It was a far cry from a program that routinely contended annually. But the closure of Waialae Bowl several years ago hurt interest.

"There's not a lot of alleys (in the Waialae-Kahala area)," Yamada said.

Kailua senior Austin Patacsil rolled 1,266 to win the boys' crown. Kalani's Aaron Yamamoto was second at 1,251.

"It's great," Patacsil said of the title. "Four years, I finally got a win. (In previous years), all of my friends went on to win."

In 2008, teammate Jonathan Nakagawa won the boys' title.

"The key was the spares," said Patacsil, who was eighth last year. "They kept me in the game."

Pearl City had five boys win medals, or finish in the top 15: Evan Hayashi (4th, 1,203), Derek Suefuji (6th, 1,169), Jonathan Carino (10th, 1,134), Nicholas Azumi (11th, 1,130) and Sheldon Naaauao (14th, 1,112).

Three Kapolei girls won medals: Bonafacio (2nd, 1,174), Valerie Ibarra (3rd, 1,134) and Shaianne Yockman (13th, 1,031).
