Moanalua girls flag football continued its undefeated streak Friday night in a 31-13 Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I quarterfinal win at home against Mililani. Moanalua was once again able to ride its star freshman quarterback Breidi-Ann Higa, who had five total touchdowns in the game.
The freshman has been lighting up the field all season for the Menehune (11-0) and leads the state in touchdowns. The pressure of the playoff game was no different for her, as she completed the game with four passing and one rushing touchdown.
"The playoff game was more nerve-racking than a regular season game because there was a lot of tension," Higa said. "We've only played teams on the East side, so this was a different team that we didn't know much about."
The standout performance started rocky for the young quarterback after Miliani (5-6-1) was able to pick off Higa on her first drive of the game. However, she was able to find her groove and scored on five of the following six drives.
"Honestly, I was in my head for a little bit, but my teammates came up to me and were telling me ‘you're good, you're good,'" Higa said. "I just had to move on to the next play, and so we got up after that and had good chemistry after that."
Higa was able to throw for 291 yards, which places her second in the state now for yards thrown with 2514. Sophomore wide receiver Shaydenurijah Key Bryd was Higa's favorite target in the game with 148 yards receiving. This was more yards than the Trojans had total in the air. One of Bryd's biggest receptions came in the third quarter, when Higa was able to show off her deep threat with a 45-yard touchdown throw to her.
The number one wide receiver in the state, Menehune's Sophomore Jodie Keo was able to catch two of Higa's touchdowns in the first half. The strong offensive presence from Moanalua's young team was too much for Miliani.
Despite Moanalua mostly dominating the game, the Trojans were able to put up 13 points, which is tied with the most points scored on Moanalua this season. The Trojans were led by junior quarterback Hayden-Elyzabeth Kaahanui-Cera, who had two rushing touchdowns. Cera had to do a lot of improvising and scrambling during the game due to the Menehunes rush, which was able to bring home four sacks. Menehune's defense was also able to come away with two interceptions.
"Our defense has been successful because of the schemes; it's simple," said Moanalua head coach Ladd Mokiao. "They know the way they got to be, and that's what makes it faster and easier for them to fly on the ball instead of thinking and moving slowly."
With a ticket now punched to the semifinal, Mokiao was already focused on the next game. The Menehune missed four of their five extra points, which was something Mokiao pointed out immediately needs to be fixed if the team wants to stay undefeated in the playoffs.
"We need to improve on special teams; extra points are key," Mokiao said.
