Muramoto's grit, durability serving Raiders well

For the Iolani softball team, grit is spelled L-E-X-I. As in Lexi Muramoto.

Muramoto, a senior catcher/infielder for the Raiders, is, as Raiders' coach Danny Kimura says, "as tough as they come."

Throughout her time with the program, Muramoto has endured her share of bumps and bruises, including a knee injury as a junior. Following the 2025 season, Muramoto underwent surgery to remove lose bone fragments in her left hand. Her recovery from that procedure limited Muramoto's availability during the winter season, but it has done little to hinder her this spring.

Muramoto boasts a .488 batting average (21 for 43), including eight extra-base knocks and has driven in a team-high 16 runs.

Kimura, the second-year coach of the Raiders, has witnessed first-hand just how dangerous Muramoto can be with a bat in her hands. Prior to taking over at the varsity level, Kimura was an assistant on Iolani's intermediate team.

"I would say if you're a pitcher facing her, it's probably better to change speeds and don't miss spots because when she's on, she'll hurt you," Kimura said.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu schedule was heavily impacted by recent storms and heavy rains that triggered postponements across the state. Consequently, Iolani was forced to play four games in as many days last week. Muramoto relished the opportunity and in turn batted 10 for 14 in those contests.

Against Mid-Pacific last Tuesday, Muramoto went 4 for 4 with a pair of home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. The next day saw her go 3 for 3 with a walk against PAC-5 and finish a homer short of hitting for the cycle. Muramoto drove in another run, and scored twice.

Muramoto had a relatively quiet day against Punahou Thursday, when she was 0 for 3, but still drove in a run on an RBI-sacrifice fly. Muramoto closed out the week with a 3-for-4 day with two more RBI against Kamehameha Friday afternoon.

Kimura noted that Muramoto went on a similar tear in the preseason, when she hit five homers in seven games.

"When she's seeing the ball good, it's pretty scary and amazing to see. When she's off, maybe she's pressing a little bit, but when she stays relaxed and does her thing, don't miss the spot because she'll hurt you," Kimura cautioned.

Muramoto has recorded five multi-hit games this season, including two four-hit games. She has reached base safely in 14 of the Raiders' 16 games in ILH play. In a win over Mid-Pacific Monday afternoon, Muramoto batted just 0 for 1, but got on three times without taking the bat off her shoulders. Muramoto walked on four pitches in each of her first three plate appearances against the Owls.

"She took her walks and understands that being patient at the plate helps your hitting because when you chase bad pitches you take yourself out of it, but she was mentally locked in and being a team player and taking all those walks and being patient," Kimura stated.

The statistics, however, don't tell the whole story of Muramoto's value to the Raiders, Kimura noted.

"It's the quality at-bats, the battles, taking a beating day in and day out behind the plate. She's been hurting all year, but still putting in the work — going and getting treatment every day, getting taped, doing everything she needs to do to be out there with the team every day," Kimura said.

It is a quiet leadership that Muramoto displays with her teammates, he added.

"She's not a real ‘rah-rah' leader, but she leads by example. She works hard, she's just kind of more on the quiet side. This year she's stepped up as a leader more to help the team, but she stays within herself, doesn't display too much emotions, although she can be hard on herself at times," Kimura said.

Whether Muramoto's catching, hitting or in the dugout, she positively impacts the rest of her teammates, Kimura says.

"Just her presence being the leader, being the catcher, being a power hitting — you can't replace that really. She's tough, she's as tough as they come, just dealing with multiple injuries. I've got two or three girls that, when they go, the whole team goes, and Lexi is one of those, for sure," Kimura expressed.

Muramoto's toughness was evident as recent as Tuesday, when she took a ball off her face mask and had to exit the game. It was one of the few instances all season where Muramoto was not behind the dish for the Raiders.

"She's missed a few innings, but she's pretty much caught the whole year," Kimura said. "I see it daily where she just looks worn down, beat up, but she does what she needs to and puts out every game. I'm not one to look too much at the stats, but I saw some of the box scores and I thought, ‘wow, that's impressive.' "

True to Iolani's ‘One Team' mantra, Muramoto has filled in wherever she has been needed over the years. She primarily played third base the past two seasons before she took over the catching position. Muramoto can also fill in at first base, if need be.

"Honestly, she's probably the best third baseman I got, but she's also my catcher. Her sophomore season she mainly played third base, but last year she played about half of the season at third," Kimura said.

Kimura, a 1997 graduate of Iolani, knows a little bit about played third base himself. Out of high school, Kimura played collegiately at the University of Nebraska before he transferred home to the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where manned the hot corner for two years with the ‘Bows.

"She's solid. She's got quick feet, she gets in front of balls and she makes the plays. If she wasn't at catcher, she would be my third baseman," Kimura said.

Muramoto has worked diligently, especially in the offseason, to hone her craft behind the plate.

"Lexi goes and plays with summer league teams on the mainland for years, so she's very experienced and knowledgeable. She lives and breathes softball," Kimura said.

Kimura shared that Muramoto has earned the right to call her own pitches.

"When she was a freshman and catching in winter league — where we let them call pitches — we were impressed how she could read batters and know pitchers. She knows if her pitcher's got certain pitches working or if their spin is on and so she's very knowledgable and helpful to our pitchers," Kimura said.

He went on: "She calls all the pitches, she calls timeouts — she's just a leader — and she's always trying to take the pressure off the girls and keep it fun for them. She keeps the team in line, keeps they relaxed, having fun and making sure they're picking each other up, so having her on the field anywhere is crucial to our success."

Despite the multitude of injuries and setbacks, along with a challenging season that has seen the Raiders finish fourth (out of five teams) in the ILH regular season, Muramoto has brought a professionalism to the field each and every day.

"To recover from a knee injury last year, then have surgery on her catching hand after last season and dealing with that all year and just being beat up all the time, she's been really resilient and just grinding it out all season," Kimura said.

Muramoto and the Raiders (5-11) are coming off of a 9-2 loss to No. 2 Maryknoll Tuesday. They will look to keep their season alive Friday in an elimination game 4 p.m. at Punahou against the Buffanblu.
