FINAL  1   2   3   4   5
IOL (2-10) 13 24 10 - - 0
HBA (12-7) 25 26 25 - - 3
Kill: J. Rivers (HBA) 21 kills

Hawaii Baptist continues to chart new waters as they completed a season sweep of Iolani Monday night. The Eagles defeated the Raiders 25-13, 26-24, 25-10. HBA improved to 6-4 while the Raiders fell to 2-6.

The Eagles, fresh off of their five-set victory over Mid-Pacific April 8, now find themselves alone in third place in ILH Division 1. The top two ILH teams qualify for the HHSAA state tournament.  The league's third place team will travel to the Big Island to play off with the BIIF third place team in early May for another state berth.

All this mattered little to HBA on this evening as it was Senior Night for the home team.

In the first set the Eagles treated their crowd to an efficient, workmanlike performance. Junior outside hitter Jason Rivers led the way with seven kills, while senior opposite Sam Mokan chipped in five kills of his own. HBA led 11-8 midway through the set before three kills from Rivers and a block by junior middle Ruka Furuta - along with two Iolani attack errors - created separation. The Eagles led 17-8 at that point and won going away, 25-13.

Set two was an entirely different story.

Iolani started the set strong pushing out to a 9-4 lead. During the run senior outside hitter Kalani Irvine and junior hitter Thorn Lallier each put down two kills, while HBA had three attack errors.  The Eagles closed to 12-11 and finally caught Iolani at 14-14 on a service ace by sophomore Landon Lau.  Two Mokan kills and two more Iolani errors gave HBA its largest lead of the set at 20-16.

However, the Raiders responded. They rallied to tie the set at 22-22 and - following a roof of Mokan - Iolani suddenly had set point, 24-23.  HBA sophomore outside Ryan Thompson - who was making his first start of the season - came through with a clutch kill to even the score.  He then put another ball away to give the Eagles the set point. HBA closed the set on a Raider error.

The third set was much like the first as HBA used a seven point run to sprint to a 14-5 lead. Yet another seven point run made the score 22-8.  A service ace by freshman Rex Iida and a Raiders attack error finished the scoring at 25-10.

HBA kill leaders were Rivers, Mokan and Thompson with 21, 13 and 7, respectively. Junior Cade Toyofuku dished out 23 assists, while fellow junior Aaron Woolpert added 17 assists.

Leading the way for Iolani was Lallier with 12 kills. No other player had more than four kills. Sophomore setter Madix Yoshizu had 22 assists for the Raiders.

For his part, Mokan credited the Mid-Pacific win for helping both his mindset as well as that of his team. "We just came off a big battle with (Mid-Pacific) and we realized we just have to side out right away. We took care of that as much as possible in tonight's second set, especially when the score was close."

He added, "One of our goals today was to get everyone in since it was Senior Night. The guys on the bench really support us, so we want to support them, too." The co-captain also had high praise for Rivers.  "We really needed him to step it up this year and he has taken on that role. He's doing really well and we trust him to side us out."

The Eagles have concluded their first round of league play and now await the results of what promises to be tightly contested matches involving the league leaders.

The Raiders next host Punahou April 15 before closing with a home match April 20 against Kamehameha.
