MILILANI - Coming off an ankle injury, Shaleah "La" Moore did not lose a step after a stellar sophomore year last season. Campbell's blitzer accounted for nine points in the Sabers' 21-6 win against Mililani Thursday night in OIA flag football.

A friends and family gathering of about 500 at John Kauinana Stadium braved a constant downpour from a weather system that drenched the island all night.

Moore scored the first points of the game with a sack in the end zone for a first-period safety and scored the final points on a 26-yard TD catch from Alexiis

 Amanonce-Feliciano in the fourth quarter. In between, Moore caught a 1-point conversion pass. She said the TD felt better than the safety. But she had some doubts about the TD.

"I thought they got me, but they didn't so I kept running," Moore said

Moore missed Tuesday's season opener, a 15-6 loss at Nanakuli, because of an ankle injury she sustained at practice. 

"I couldn't play for a month and yesterday (Wednesday) was my first practice," said Moore,  who had 41 receiving yards from three catches.

Besides her relentless pursuit of Trojans' QB Hayden-Elizabeth Kaahanui-Cera, Moore also deflected two passes.

It was a crucial win for the defending state champions. They struggled in their loss to Nanakuli two days earlier.

"It was important to start strong after the season opener (loss)," Campbell coach Wil Naboa said, "I thought the girls - on both sides of the ball - responded very well. And I honestly feel that special teams (helped) with field position. All of that really helped swing the momentum our way."

Punter Zophia Cabrales' booming punts and favorable rolls pinned Mililani deep in its own territory throughout the game. Mililani had zero yardage on returns.

"She was able to switch the field for us; that was key," Naboa said. "And we were able to adjust to the conditions better this time around, so we made some key changes and adjustments that were crucial in the win."

Campbell showed its depth, using three different players at quarterback, sharing time with Amanonce-Feliciano were Jaynalyn Sotelo and Kealohilani Akana.

After the safety by Moore, the Sabers added to their lead just before the half on Amanonce-Feliciano's 11-yard TD pass to Sotelo, who also had an interception. The PAT failed, but the Sabers took an 8-0 lead into the half.

Midway through the third quarter, Campbell widened its lead on Akana's 35-yard TD run. Moore caught a 1-point conversion pass to make it 15-0.

But Mililani had a quick response with Kaahanui-Cera's 5-yard TD pass to Zennalen Nelson to pull the Trojans to 15-6 with 2:29 in the third.

The Sabers sealed the game on Moore's 26-yard TD reception with 1:38 left in the game.

The Trojans outgained the Sabers, 231 yards to 191,  and had 12 first downs to Campbell's 10.

Kahanui-Cera was 14 of 35 for 160 passing yards. Liyanah Tirare Tauvale had eight catches for a game-high 116 yards.

In the doubleheader opener, freshman QB Breidi-Ann Higa passed for five touchdowns and 262 yards to lead Na Menehune to a 32-6 win against Kahuku. Sophomore Jodie Key led all receivers with 163 yards from five catches, three of them for TDs.

The Red Raiders took a 6-0 lead in the first on Daela-Joji Seui-Kubota's 4-yard TD pass to Ariana Magalei. From then, Moanalua's defense shutdown Kahuku, which ended the game with 67 yards in total offense to Moanalua's 273.

Styralynn Hoakalei Reyes led Moanalua with seven stops, three of them sacks. Kahuku's  Maja Paopao led all defenders with six stops, four of them sacks.
