It may not have really been a must-win game for the Warriors, but not if you ask Kaahupahau Montgomery.

"Our team has been working for this the whole season, and this was a must-win because we want to be the first seed and win the ILH," she explained. "So just to have a state berth is amazing and we're super excited and ready to go."

Kamehameha claimed the league title and with it, the aforementioned berth to the upcoming Division I state tournament, with a heart pulsing 1-0 win over Iolani.

Montgomery broke a scoreless seal in the 60th minute when deflected ball near the Warriors' goal, which had every appearance as an opportunity for the Raiders to get a score, took a lofty bounce and found its way eventually to the rangy midfielder, who took it nearly two-thirds the length of the pitch basically unchallenged and finished it deftly past the keeper in the 60th minute.

"Our team has been working on counters, so once we saw the (opportunity to) counter, that's what we've trying to pounce on, and we did," said Montgomery of the play.

From there, the Warriors battled the final 20 minutes to both keep the Raiders out of the attacking third, as well as seek out an insurance score, but only accomplished one of those two. A golden opportunity for that second goal did come in the 79th minute when Camryn Gouveia received a pass from the right corner for a clear shot, but saw the strike hit the top bar.

Iolani battled to the final ticks, and had a chance on a corner kick in the final minute of play, but could not sniff out the score as the final whistle sounded.

The first half saw the Warriors largely controlling both pace and possession, but no real scoring to chances to speak of. While the Raiders might not have spent as much time in the attacking zone as the visiting squad, the best chance at scoring in the first half was theirs.

In the 24th minute, Logan Pang found herself the recipient of a pass from the right wing with just enough space to get off a strike with pace toward goal, one that was barely deflected by the Warriors' keeper. The ball rocketed upwards where it nicked the top bar and was ultimately cradled safely.

At least some of the credit for Iolani's difficulty with winning possessions on 50-50 balls in the midfield goes to the play of Warriors' midfielder Ayva-Ray Malepeai, who consistently claimed those jump balls from the Raiders.

"She's a volleyball player so her vertical is amazing," remarked Montgomery. "So her being holding is very helpful for us and our backline."

The regular season concluded today for the Warriors, but two games remain for the Raiders, a Tuesday tilt against Punahou II and then the season finale against Punahou, both at the friendly confines of Eddie Hamada Field.

A win or draw versus Punahou II would mean that the Raiders would then require just a draw against Punahou to finish second. A loss against Punahou II would make the finale against the Buffanblu a must-win, as a draw in that scenario would not be enough to secure the second best record in the league standings.
