MANOA — Luke Weaver came off the sideline in relief to throw the game-winning 22-yard touchdown pass to Nick Cenacle to help Hawaii stun California, 35-31, to win the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl at the Clarence T. C. Ching Complex Wednesday.

A crowd of 14,301 saw the Rainbow Warriors overcome a 21-point first half deficit, tying their largest comeback in program history, to finish the 2025 campaign 9-4 overall.

Pofele Ashlock was named the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl MVP and caught 14 passes for 123 yards. The 14 receptions tied a Hawaii Bowl record.

"As you can see right there, 14 catches, man, I can't do that by myself. It's been amazing that you have have a quarterback that listens to me like that," Ashlock said.

Cenacle overcame an injury-plagued season to finish with a season-high eight catches for 59 yards.

"For him, his heart and his grind and his work ethic is always there man. Just God rewarding our work and I think that was the biggest play right there to put a message to all of it, that you can do this regardless of what adversity you go through then go attack it," Ashlock said of Cenacle.

Micah Alejado threw for 274 yards on 32-of-46 passing, two of his TD passes went to Ashlock.

Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele went 28 of 39 for 343 yards and a touchdown on the same field he watched Campbell win the Open Division state championship 19 days ago.

"Man it was really a blessing, God really blessed me to come back home and thankful with family and friends and it was really a great atmosphere. It was a great feeling and I'm so thankful to everyone that came out and supported the Bears," Sagapolutele said.

"A couple lefties, playing with extreme confidence, extreme efficiency and led with a real competitive spirit that I think is infectious to the rest of the team," added Cal interim coach Nick Rolovich.

He quarterbacked the Rainbow Warriors and led Hawaii as head coach from 2016-19 and took over for Cal (7-6 overall) after Justin Wilcox was let go.

Aided by a pair of offside penalties, Sagapolutele completed a 12-yard pass to Jacob De Jesus, who finished with nine catches for 137 yards, to set up his 1-yard sneak for a 31-28 lead with 1:57 left in the fourth.

Alejado gained 12 yards up the middle and left the game for one play. Weaver completed a 6-yard pass to Max Ware to the Cal 35. Alejado completed a 13-yard pass to Cam Barfield to the 22 but left the game for a play due to injury.

Weaver came in to throw the game-winning touchdown pass to Nick Cenacle with 10 seconds remaining.

Sagapolutele completed 13 and 20-yard passes to Trond Grizzell, but the Golden Bears were flagged for an illegal forward pass to end the game.

The win resulted in Hawaii's sixth Hawaii Bowl title and is 2-0 against ACC opponents this season as the Rainbow Warriors knocked off Stanford in the season opener in walkoff fashion.

Hawaii was bowl eligible for the first time under head coach Timmy Chang and finished with their most wins since 2019.

Sagapolutele led the Golden Bears on their opening scoring drive, going 5-for-5 for 64 yards and finding a wide-open De Jesus for a 41-yard score.

Rainbow Warriors came up empty after a 50-yard attempt by Kansei Matsuzawa went right, his second miss all season.

Kendrick Raphael added to the Golden Bears lead with a 19-yard run and Anthony League gashed the Hawaii defense with an 8-yard touchdown run to make it, 21-0.

Alejado threw a strike to Ashlock down the middle for a 13-yard score and Matsuzawa put through the PAT to get Hawaii on the scoreboard.

Matagi Thompson (Punahou) broke up Sagapolutele's pass to force a three-and-out. Hawaii drove down to the Golden Bears' 11 but settled for Matsuzawa's 29-yard field goal to trail, 21-10.

Sagapolutele completed two passes to QuaRon Adams for 27 yards and scrambled for a 17-yard gain to set up Abram Murray's 47-yard attempt, but it wide left as time expired.

Hawaii opened the second half with a 13 play, 61-yard drive capped by Matsuzawa's 39-yard field goal.

Alejado went down with injury with 0:39 to go in the third quarter, but returned to lead the Rainbow Warriors for the game tying score to Ashlock from 3 yards out.

Ashlock's touchdown was upheld after review and Alejado's underhanded pass to Cam Barfield for two tied the game at 21 with 13:50 to go in the fourth.

Chase Meyer put the Golden Bears ahead, 24-21, on a 22-yard field goal with 8:56 left.

Hawaii answered with a four play, 59-yard drive and Alejado found Brandon White in the corner of the end zone from 17 yards. It was initially called incomplete but was overturned to give the Rainbow Warriors their first lead of the game.

Aidan Manutai (Kahuku) had three solo tackles and Stanley Saole-McKenzie (Saint Louis) added a tackle for the Golden Bears.

Peter Manuma (Campbell) had a team-high seven solo tackles with a pass break up and Wynden Hoohuli (Mililani) had eight total tackles, three solo for the Rainbow Warrior defense.

This was the sixth meeting between the teams and Cal won last meeting in 2016, 51-31 in Sydney, Australia.
