Kaiser stopped OIA East leading Kalani's win streak at four, jumping ahead in the first half before conceding the equalizer with 14 minutes in the match, settling for a 1-1 draw in the first of two regular seaosn matches between the two squads.
The tie allowed Kaiser to remain in sole possession of second place in the standings at 2-1-1, with the Falcons in a failry commanding position atop the division at 4-0-1.
Isaac Davies was fouled inside the penalty area in the 24th minute and made the most of the opportunity, tucking the ball past the Falcons' keeper for a somewhat surprising 1-0 lead that held all the way through to the 65th minute of play.
During that span, Kalani had more than its fair share of opportunities to get its first goal, but the steady play of senior keeper Kaiea McKillop kept the ball out of goal no less than five times in the second half alone, as the home team clearly went on the offensive, looking much more otganized and composed than they did in the firstt 40.
"They had a lot of shots and everything, and you know it was a bit of an unlucky goal but I'm proud that we played well as a team," said McKillop of Kaiser's effort.
That attack eventually paid dividends in the 66th for Kalani, as Arawi De La Cuba found even open space near the top of the box and his strike touched the back of the net to even the score.
"It was more like a long ball that bounced over the defender and he kind of turned around, so I knew I was in on goal," said De La Cuba. "The right side of the goal opened up a bit so I kind of took a shot, hoping for the best."
From that point onward, as it was for much of the contest, the Falcons had a decided advantage in both possession and opportunity in the attacking half, but the Cougars were not without their chances, the best one coming in the latter stages on a direct free taken by Rui Mizukami that drew just outside the right post.
Credit the Cougars, playing without their backline orchestator Masa Akimoto, unable to suit up due today due to illness, for withstanding the offensive barrage of the Falcons' bevy of weapons in the attacking third.
At the midpoint, Kalani remains in an extremely strong position to claim the top seed out of the East, but with just 1-0 wins over Castle and Roosevelt and a tie against nemesis Kaiser, much could change before the end of the regular season.
"Definitely today, Kaiser, we had the toughest time. I also don't think we weren't at our best, but they definitely have some good players and the East is definitely competitive this year," said De La Cuba.
