As the old baseball adage says, hitting is timing and pitching is disrupting timing.
Lincoln Pang's performance Saturday is proof of that.
Pang, a senior left-handed pitcher for the Saint Louis baseball team, threw a complete-game three-hitter to lead his team to a 5-0 win over Waiakea in the title game of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Championships at Wailuku's Iron Maehara Stadium.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Pang registered only two strikeouts but allowed just one walk. He faced four more batters than the minimum and threw 43 of his 75 total pitches for strikes. Pang put only four Warriors on base with just one reaching third base.
"As a coach you can't ask for anything else than that — I mean, complete game — who would have known that he would have threw that and I think he knew it's probably gonna be his last high school game and as a player you want to make sure you go out with a big bang," Saint Louis coach Benny Agbayani said.
Not only was it Pang's only complete game in three varsity seasons, it was just his fifth appearance in a game this spring. In fact, since he first joined the varsity team as a sophomore, Pang had only pitched in seven games prior to this year. His longest outing prior to Saturday was five innings (three times). Pang's career record entering the state tournament was 2-0 over 33 2/3 innings pitched.
"It was unbelievable. He surprised the heck out of me that I had to give him a big hug after," Agbayani said. "He knew what was on the line and he knew that his teammates had his back, but it's amazing. He made history — last game, complete-game shutout — I mean, wow. He threw an all-star (caliber) game right there."
As a sophomore Pang logged a 3.82 earned run over over 11 innings and was not the pitcher of record in any of his three appearances that season. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
The following year saw Pang pitch 11 innings over four games with a 1-0 record and a 1.27 ERA. He allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts and five walks in his junior campaign.
This season Pang appeared in four games, including three starts, but had not factored into a decision until his Apr. 15th start against Kamehameha. Pang allowed one run on two hits over five innings of work with eight strikeouts against three walks to pick up the win.
Agbayani pointed to that outing as a bit of a confidence booster for Pang headed into the postseason.
"We were switching pitchers often during the season just to find the mix and the right pitchers that were going to keep us in the ballgames and that game really boosted his confidence I think. He seems to always pitch well against Kamehameha — last year he did — but I have confidence in all my pitchers. When we give them the ball I just tell them to do the best they can," Agbayani said.
Pang worked his way back from a "couple setbacks" this season, including a hamstring injury, Agbayani disclosed.
"He had to build up his strength. We kind of monitored him throughout the season and I just thought at that moment I had a good feeling that maybe I should give him the ball today and see how he does. We had other guys in the bullpen ready, but I was gonna ride him as long as I could," Agbayani said.
Agbayani said it wasn't until Saturday morning during a team stretching session outside the hotel that he decided Pang would take the bump that evening in what was easily the biggest game of his prep career.
"I told Kevin Fujioka, our pitching coach, to make sure to let Lincoln know that he got the ball today and we just kind of left him alone after that. When you're a (pitcher only) you kind of zone into how you prepare for the game, but when I gave him the ball I told him, ‘You can't rewind the clock. This is your time. This your moment. Do the best you can,' " Agbayani stated.
Pang kept the Waiakea bats quiet with a heavy dose of off-speed offerings between his curveball and change-up. He mixed in his fastball ball, which Agbayani estimates tops out at 75 miles per hour —"probably not more than that" — but proved effective because of its late movement.
"His fastball cuts back into lefties and goes away from righties and that night it was moving," Agbayani said. "He was nibbling here and there and he just found that niche where the umpire was calling."
Overpowering batters is clearly not Pang's modus operandi.
"He's one of those crafty lefties who will just hit his spots and lets the batters get themselves out, but as a hitter, you really gotta study him. He's one of those that doesn't look like the typical baseball guy, but he gets the job done. As long as he doesn't fall behind (in the count), he'll get batters out," Agbayani said.
Aside from Pang's two strikeouts, he retired the rest of the Warriors on 10 ground-ball outs, five fly-ball outs and four line-outs. The Crusaders played error-free ball behind him.
"That's what we told him, that our defense is pretty stellar and they're really good and I think for him and the way he pitches, he's not going to overpower guys, so he understands to make his pitches, hit his spots and pitch to contact. We told him the defense got his back and I think he trusted that as a pitcher and after the first couple innings he just started getting better and better," Agbayani said.
Pang gave up a single to the second batter he faced then walked the next, but induced back-to-back groundouts to strand both runners in scoring position in the top of the first inning.
He retired a string of 13 consecutive batters until Waiakea rapped out back-to-back two-out singles off of Pang in the top of the fifth. However, Pang got the next batter to ground out to escape the jam.
He then sat the Warriors down in order in both the sixth and seventh frames to close out the game.
Agbayani said the Crusaders were able to watch most of Waiakea's 1-0 semifinal win over Baldwin Friday before they punched their own ticket to Saturday's final with a 6-1 win over Kamehameha-Maui.
"We were kind of watching how some of the batters were and we knew most of the time, especially playing on Maui, you know how to pitch to some of the players and we were just hoping (Pang) would make those pitches and he did. Again, that's all you can ask for. Whatever we called, he threw and it was great — it worked," Agbayani said.
Pang, who Agbayani describes as "quirky," proved his mettle Saturday after biding his time over the last three years. Agbayani said Pang hopes to walk-on to play baseball at the University of Hawaii at Hilo next year.
"He's very studious, he's quiet, he's just kind of to himself. He can be funny but he's just one of those kids that you kind of leave him alone and you know he's in his own world. He's really a sensitive kid, but when he gets on the mound he goes after it," Agbayani described.
In the title game, Saint Louis rapped out nine hits, including seven from their top four batters in the lineup, en route to a 5-0 win over Waiakea. Second baseman Mana Heffernan batted 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, leadoff batter Kahanukalahou Martinez singled, drew a walk, drove in a run and scored twice and Agbayani's son, Bruin, a senior shortstop, went 2 for 3 with a walk; He also belted an RBI-triple and scored a run.
The result was the Crusaders' first state championship since 2014 and third overall. It is Agbayani's first state crown coaching his alma mater and comes five years after he coached Iolani to a state softball crown with daughters Aleia and Ailana playing prominent roles that season.
"It's pretty special. I mean, to do it with my daughters and now my son, now in the household it's all fair now: they won a state title and he won a state title," said Agbayani, who just completed his second season as coach at Saint Louis.
"I know my son wanted me to coach him and this was a great opportunity and a blessing to be hired here. Him being my parents' last grandchild and a soon-to-be graduate of Saint Louis, it's a proud moment for me," Agbayani said.
Saint Louis finished third in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with a 11-6 league record, but won four games in four days on Maui over then-No. 7 Kamehameha-Hawaii, No. 3 Mililani, No. 2 Kamehameha-Maui and No. 10 Waiakea.
The Crusaders finished the season with a 15-6 record and ranked No. 1 in the final ScoringLive Power Rankings.
