To say that Campbell flag football coach Will Naboa is happy to have Shaleah Moore on his team might be the understatement of the century.
Moore, a 5-foot-4 sophomore blitzer/wide receiver, was an instrumental piece of the Sabers' run to a state championship in the inaugural season of girls' flag football in Hawaii.
Campbell stood alone at the top of the proverbial podium after Saturday night's 6-0 win over Leilehua in the title game of the Hawaii Dental Service/HHSAA State Championship. It capped an 11-2 record for the team this year, which culminated with four victories in as many days last week.
Moore certainly played a big part in the Sabers' success this spring. She amassed no fewer than 36 flag pulls, 23 for losses and 20 sacks. Additionally, Moore came up with three interceptions.
"She probably had over 50 quarterback hurries," Naboa said of Moore.
The numbers are off the charts, to be sure.
Over the course of Campbell's four state tournament games, Moore racked up 17 flag pulls, 11 behind the line of scrimmage and nine sacks. She also tallied six quarterback hurries and broke up a half-dozen passes.
Moore was one of four Sabers selected to the all-tournament team and was tabbed by the HHSAA and media covering the tournament as its most outstanding player.
"I mean, her relentless pursuit and motor throughout that four-day span, I think is going to be talked about for years to come because she just kept coming play after play after play," Naboa said.
Naboa isn't shy in calling for Moore to earn even more hardware in the aftermath of the season.
"She put up just ungodly numbers and her earning that recognition just shows the grit and tenacity that she has and just frankly being one of the key leaders on the team and I'm so happy for her to get all that she deserves. I truly believe that she deserves to be the player of the year in the state."
In Campbell's opening game of the 16-team tournament, a 27-18 win over Baldwin Wednesday, Moore registered just one sack and two quarterback hurries. The following day, however, she came up with three sacks to help her team hold off ILH champion Kamehameha by a score of 28-20.
Friday's semifinal matchup against OIA runner-up Mililani saw Moore harass the opposition to the tune of four sacks, three quarterback hurries and two pass break-ups. She contributed on the offensive side of the ball as well with six catches for 43 yards in the 14-0 win for the Sabers.
But Moore saved arguably her best performance for the biggest stage. In Saturday's win over the Mules in the state final, Moore piled up nine flag pulls, including three for losses and one sack. She also broke up a pair of passes.
In four state tournament games, Campbell's defense held opponents to only 9.5 points and 143 yards per game, including only 10.5 rushing yards per contest. The Sabers came up with 11 interceptions last week.
Naboa knew it was all well within the realm of possibilities given the sweat equity that Moore and the rest of the defense has put in over the course of the season.
"I knew in my heart of hearts that they were capable of putting up those kinds of numbers. We had to put them in the right position to make plays, but ultimately they had to execute it and just seeing it over the last two, three weeks of the season, seeing us shutout these teams and the quality of opponents that we were able to shutout, overall I was not surprised because I saw what they did day in and day out and it's a scary, formidable defense and you could take it to the bank, I believed that nobody would score on that defense," Naboa said.
Most teams opted to commit two players defensively to blitzing the quarterback, leaving five other defenders to cover up to six receivers in the pattern. However, Campbell was able to predominantly leave the pass-rushing duties to Moore — often lined up against two blockers — which allowed her six teammates behind her to account for just four receivers.
"I mean, that's everything. If you can disrupt the quarterback's timing, the receiver's timing and the offense as a whole just with one player, you have six players to drop back in coverage and I think that's unmatched. You can't measure the kind of effect that has on the game," Naboa said.
Moore brought a plethora of experience to the table when she joined the team, but Naboa detailed the growth in her game that she saw over the course of the season.
"She's always had a knack for rushing the quarterback, but I think over time she grew to understand the game more. I think she grew tremendously in her football IQ," said Naboa, who noted that in most outside leagues quarterbacks are unable to run beyond the line of scrimmage when opposing defenses blitz.
"They have to scramble to pass, so it's very different to rush a quarterback when they can run and there's a lot of open space. You not only have to worry about taking the right pursuit angles at the quarterback, but she was able to force the quarterback the way she wanted them to go so that the defense has an advantage," Naboa added.
Moore athleticism allowed her to elevate when quarterbacks would wind up to throw to a receiver downfield — which often made them think twice and hang on to the ball instead — and then pull their flag on her way down almost simultaneously.
"It would leave the quarterback bewildered about what just happened because you just don't see that. You see them communicating to their coach that they need help and it would leave me amazed at times of what she does. I just stand in awe and I just applaud her because they throw two, three blockers at her and she gets by all of them. Her ability to have and use angles and bend and anticipate what the quarterback is going to do. A lot of rushers know how to get to the quarterback, but they don't know how to break down and they end up running past them, but she's able to do everything at one time at a quick processing speed. I just can't say enough good things about her," Naboa said.
Naboa likens Moore to Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. He calls her the catalyst for the Sabers' defense.
"For sure. I think Mike Tyson said it best: Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. Everybody always says they can handle pressure until they have to face (Moore). Her disruptive presence, her high motor, it just creates unmatched pressure and it leaves fear in the quarterback's eyes so much so that she hears it, she smells it and if (Moore) starts getting to the quarterback it feeds our defensive fire and that's where the picks start coming in, the flag pulls — all of that — so I think she has a far greater effect on her teammates than she knows or she's aware of," Naboa said.
Despite being just a sophomore, Moore was voted by her teammates to serve as one of the team captains this year. She leads by example more so than with her words.
"She doesn't speak much but when she does speak everyone listens. Her being voted by her teammates as a captain speaks volumes of what her teammates think of her and she's not going to be someone to tell you something and not do it herself, so she definitely leads from the front," Naboa said.
Fortunately for the Sabers — and unfortunately for their opponents — Moore still has two years of eligibility remaining.
"I'm loving every moment of having her on our team, but if I'm an opposing offensive coordinator or head coach, I'd be having nightmares," Naboa laughed.
Saturday's championship trophy presentation at midfield of Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium — which included, amongst others, Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke and Hawaii Department of Education Superintendent Keith Hayashi — served as the Sabers' coronation as queens of the gridiron.
"It's definitely been a whirlwind since then for the girls. They got a lot of congratulatory texts and phone calls and I told them to take it all in because it's a once-in-a-lifetime moment and something that nobody can take away from them, to enjoy everything coming their way while being humble about it, but they earned it, no one gave it to them, so they should be proud of all the hard work and this is the fruit of all their labor. It's all about the girls, they did the work and I'm just so happy for them," Naboa said.
