Saunette Oshiro stands out in many ways for the undefeated Pearl City softball team. 

Not only is the 5-foot-6 shortstop having a stellar campaign this spring — see her .633 batting average for example — but Oshiro carries the torch for the Chargers as their lone senior on a roster that is youthful, to say the least. 

"We have one senior, one junior, two sophomores and 10 freshmen," third-year Pearl City coach Erin Barros said. "Saunette is the only senior."

Barros said that Oshiro has placed a large amount of responsibility on her own shoulders as a team captain and her teammates have fallen in line behind her. 

"As much as she puts a lot of pressure on herself, the freshmen took to it and have followed her lead and as they've gone along and gained each other's trust, Saunette has been able to back off and let the girls kind of figure things out for themselves, so that's been really good for her and for the younger girls on the team," Barros said. 

To be sure, Oshiro's style of leadership is largely by example. 

"She pushes as hard as she can every day. She believes that practice and hard work outweighs talent and she always wants to learn and improve and I think that and her confidence has helped her to where she is now and she and I both believe that confidence comes from the work that she puts in," Barros said. 

Often times, Barros revealed, Oshiro will text her early in the day to dismay Barros from canceling practice on a rainy or wet day. 

"She'll say, ‘It might clear up by 2 p.m.,' " Barros laughed. She also pointed out that Oshiro puts in extra work with private lessons after practices on most nights. 

"She always wants to put out 100 percent out there, so she just puts in the time and the results are from the effort she puts in and as a team we're reaping the benefits," Barros expressed. 

While Oshiro's work ethic has been consistent over the years, the results have not always been there. 

As a freshman catcher three years ago, Oshiro managed just four hits in 28 at-bats on the year (.143 batting average). Pearl City posted only two wins that season. 

The following year saw the Chargers go just 1-12 while Oshiro hit 5 for 34 (.147). Oshiro's junior season saw her up her batting average to .412 (14 of 34), but her team struggled through another one-win season in the rigorous OIA Division I West. 

"Her (bat) has been so much better than her sophomore year. We talked about her being too picky in the strike zone and last year she relaxed and the results got better. This year she's opened up, she's learned to put the ball in play, she knows how to place the ball when we've got runners on and she knows how to score the runners — she's a very unselfish player," Barros said. 

Oshiro recorded five multi-hit games a year ago and twice collected three hits in a game. She went 3 for 4 with a triple, one stolen base and three runs scored against Nanakuli and later in the year had back-to-back games with four runs batted in (3 for 5, triple, three stolen bases, three runs scored vs. Kapolei and 2 for 3, triple, double, walk, three runs vs. Nanakuli). 

"It showed a glimpse of what could do, what hard work does and since then she definitely worked in the offseason, she's definitely put in work this season and she's really grown. Her sophomore year she would be so good in practice and then in games it just wasn't the same," Barros said. 

Oshiro drove in 11 total runs and scored 13 times last season. She tallied a half-dozen extra-base hits and five stolen bases. 

This spring she's taken her game to another level. She racked up 11 RBI in a single game in last week Thursday's rout of Farrington. Oshiro batted 5 for 5 with two home runs, two doubles, nearly a dozen runs batted in and five runs scored — and a walk for good measure.

Barros said that prior to the start of the season, Oshiro laid out her individual and team goals for this year and shared them with her younger teammates. 

"She wrote out her goals and wanted to show the freshmen to show them that you as a player have to know it, have to believe it and have to say it. Her goals were high: she wanted to be OIA champs, she wanted an undefeated season, she wanted to push for states and she wanted to be Player of the Year, so she set the highest goals that she could and I think having that type of mindset really showed the freshmen how hard you have to work to get what you want," Barros said. 

In addition to her offensive prowess, Barros noted that Oshiro is quite the versatile player defensively. She primarily played catcher early in her prep career, but has seen time at every position except pitcher over her years. 

Barros compared Oshiro's defensive ability to that of former Mililani shortstop Taryn Hinano, the OIA D1 West Player of the Year a season ago. 

"She has that kind of depth in her game," Barros commented. "She's quick, she has a lot of range, she has a really strong arm, she has a great attitude and sometimes I'm in awe of her defense when I watch her play. She also thinks really quick on her feet, she reacts well and she knows the game of softball so she knows what to do with the ball in her hands and where to go with it, so she possesses things that you can't teach that just comes from her game knowledge."

The Chargers dropped down to the Division II ranks this season and Oshiro and the Chargers have absolutely feasted on the competition. She opened the regular season hot (2 for 4, double, three RBI, run) against Kailua and has yet to cool off. Oshiro has hit safely in all nine games this year and has recorded seven multi-hit games. 

Oshiro is 19 for 30 at the plate this season. She has collected 23 RBI and 19 runs scored. Thirteen of her base-knocks have gone for extra bases, including a D2-best nine doubles. 

"She definitely went through some growing pains early on in high school so I'm definitely happy for her. She's putting in the work and the time, she also does well in the classroom, but I think this girl really eats and breathes softball. She tried to tell us she was going to do water polo this year — we laughed — and she said, ‘just kidding,' " Barros said. 

While Oshiro has a bit of jokester in her, she is all business when it comes time to work. Barros said that Oshiro takes a very cerebral approach when it comes to learning and training. 

"There are times that Saunette will question us if we give her a drill, but it's really that she wants to know ‘what is this drill teaching me? What do I gain from it?,' so that she can focus in on that. She's one who wants to know why and what and how, so for her she needs a full understanding — she's not just a visual learner — and she needs you to talk her through it but it's just because she's so intense about everything and I think that intensity is what allows her to keep improving," Barros detailed. 

Pearl City is in the midst of a 9-0 start to the season and will be the No. 1 seed in this week's six-team OIA D2 tournament. Barros traces much of the team's success to the bonds that were forged during a preseason trip to Kauai. 

"I think that was the best thing we did. We go every year and while you're there, you stay in one room together and you have to spend every moment together. There's no cliques, everybody is forced to talked to everybody and I think that Kauai trip just set a tone for the bond that these girls have. The trust they built over those games and throughout the preseason and going into season has led them to where we are and got everybody on the same page, with the same goals of going undefeated and winning the OIA and that no matter where you put us, we're going to fight as hard as we can and I think that's where this whole team's attitude is," Barros stated.

After her playing days with the Chargers are through in a few weeks, Oshiro will continue her education and softball career at Eastern Arizona Junior College. 

"She knows she has a chance to grow in those two years there and go further than that. She plays club and she gives them a lot of credit for giving her exposure, but she's the one always putting in the work all the time. Just like in high school I think she'll have to go through some growing pains in college, but she'll take whatever the coaches tell her and she'll work and exceed and that's just how her brain works, so I'm excited to see her further career," Barros said. 

Aside from softball, Oshiro's other passion is food, Barros noted. 

"She's the best person to take with you to an all-you-can-eat place. She loves food. Her morning ritual before every game is she eats two cans of Vienna sausage, eggs and rice. That and she loves the beach," Barros said. 

Oshiro and the Chargers will play in a 3 p.m. semifinal at home on Thursday against the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between Waialua and Radford. Second-seeded Aiea will take on either Kalaheo or Kailua in the other semifinal.

Thursday's semifinal winners will advance to play in Friday's D2 title game, 4 p.m. at McKinley Tiger Softball Stadium.
