Scully's versatility a boon for first-place Na Alii

In the short time that Khendel Scully has been on the Aiea boys volleyball team, he's certainly made his presence felt.

Scully, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Leilehua, is making the most of his senior season with Na Alii, who sit at 9-0 atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division entering Tuesday night's regular-season finale. Scully's impact has been widespread as he has served as both an opposite-side hitter and a middle blocker, as well as a setter this spring.

"He plays anywhere you want him to. He's a very talented boy," longtime Aiea coach Erin Coker said of Scully, a six-rotation player and one of three co-captains.

The addition of Scully has been a boon for Coker's crew, especially his fellow seniors Fidelis Mauigoa and Julian Quartero-Echalas. Mauigoa has been the team's go-to hitter for several seasons, while Quartero-Echalas is a libero-turned-pin hitter. The trio make up Na Alii's triumvirate of captains.

"All three of them are tremendously very good players and Khendel is one of the sparks for the team. When he's not there, they do okay, but if he's there then his presence provides a lot for the rest of the boys. He can play any position — so can the other two — and most of the players can do everything because that's how we train, but having Khendel here I think pushes the team up to higher standards," Coker described.

Despite being in his first season with the program, Scully quickly earned the respect of his fellow teammates and coaches to receive their recognition in being selected as a captain. The process was an organic one, Coker said.

"It kind of comes out from within them. They're the leaders on and off the court and how they play produces a certain effect on the team, so if we're down they have the ability to pick us up," Coker added.

Coker describes Scully, Mauigoa and Quartero-Echalas as "the heart, the soul and the spirit of the team."

"This team is like glue — they'll stick together — and I think it's because of the three seniors. They'll fight for you, they'll be there for you and they pick each other up and now the fact that they're now a trio instead of just one or two persons, it just helps even more. They stand together, they don't get excited, they're able to be in control and all three of them have been huge factors and they've just jelled," Coker said.

It didn't take long for Scully to prove his worth. In the OIA West-opener against perennial powerhouse Mililani, Scully nearly recorded a triple-double with 21 kills, 14 set assists and nine digs. He also was in on five blocks, including two solo blocks in the four-set win over the Trojans.

Scully followed that up with a 17-kill, 13-assist effort in a sweep of Waianae a week later. He also notched two service aces, two digs and a pair of block assists in the sweep.

"I think he's a coach's dream because you can tell him to play outside, he can oppo, he can play middle and he can set the 5-1," Coker said. "The thing about Khendel is he listens, he hears and we give a lot of direction to the rest of the players through him, so he's very coachable."

Scully recorded back-to-back matches of 20-plus assists. He tallied 21 assists, seven kills, two digs, two aces and three blocks in a sweep of Waipahu then came back with 26 assists, nine kills, five digs and one ace in a sweep of Radford five days later.

Scully has racked up 10 aces and 13 total blocks on the year.

"Khendel has a great float serve and has scored a lot of points from the service line, but he also has that eye for the block — he can look for the ball and just cover that ball — so that's why sometimes we put him in the middle, plus he can also jump," Coker said.

In a four-set win over Nanakuli two weeks ago, Scully put down a season-high 24 kills to go along with 16 assists, five digs and an ace. Most recently, Aiea rallied to a five-set win over Campbell last Tuesday in which Scully recorded 15 kills, 17 assists, two digs, two aces and was in on six blocks.

The set scores were 20-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19 and 16-14.

"Last year we were up two sets against Campbell and they won the next three, so this year they won the first two and we pushed and fought back so hard and won the next three," Coker said.

Coker noted that her team played from behind in every set, including a 10-6 deficit in the deciding fifth frame.

"That was amazing. This team, they don't give up, they fight, fight, fight and I'm just in awe because we were behind most of the night and they just took it one point at a time and they pulled through as a team — and I think that was key: We're not just setting those three seniors, other players were hitting and they all played a part so the whole team did their part in the game," Coker said.

The come-from-behind victory assured Aiea of a first-place finish in the OIA Division I West standings and more importantly the first-round bye that comes with it in the upcoming 12-team league tournament.

Scully posted 10 of his kills and 11 of his assists in the final three sets. He was in on four blocks in set 3 alone.

Scully did not play in Thursday's match against Waialua due to illness. Coker is hopeful he will be available Tuesday night against his former school.

"We're still a work in progress, but I think with every game we're showing a little bit more growth and they're believing that they're capable of succeeding so hopefully we keep up our record," Coker said.

Scully and Na Alii (9-0), who are ranked ninth in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings, host the Mules (4-4) at 6:30 p.m.

The OIA tournament begins Apr. 23 with the championship game slated for Apr. 30.
