Red-hot Sabers following lead of Alo

When it comes to Sophie Alo, you could say that success runs in the family.

Alo, a third-year starter for the Campbell softball team, is off to a smashing start to her junior season. The 5-foot-8 first baseman/designated hitter — younger sister to former Saber standouts Jocelyn and Lorraine Alo — ranks among the state's top sluggers with a gaudy .650 batting average this spring.

"She's a big hitter and everybody follows her and what she can do, so she's been great; She's just a great athlete, a great leader in school and on the field," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said of Alo, who has hit safely in all six OIA West regular season this year and 12 straight games dating back to last season.

This year Alo has recorded 13 hits in 20 at-bats, including four extra-base hits (two home runs, triple, double). She has driven in a team-best 13 runs and scored eight times herself, which ranks second on the team.

"Her skills are natural, but she works hard at practice and she's continually trying to improve her skills over the years and just keeps working harder and harder and harder," Hermosura said.

As a freshman two years ago, Alo was primarily the team's DH. She put together a respectable .356 batting average that season, which saw the Sabers complete an unblemished 16-0 run en route to the fifth state championship in program history. It also marked the lone season that Sophie played with her older sister Lorraine, who graduated a few weeks later and went on to play collegiately at Portland State.

The highlight of Sophie Alo's freshman season was a three-hit day against rival Mililani in which she doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice to back Taryn Irimata's seven-strikeout complete game.

The following year was anything but a sophomore slump for Alo, who took over first-base duties and increased her batting average to .490 with 21 RBIs and 18 runs scored. Alo swatted four home runs, tallied nine multi-hit games last spring and twice recorded a four-RBI day to help Campbell compile a 13-5 overall mark and a trip to the state semifinals.

Alo picked up All-OIA West Second Team honors and All-Hawaii Honorable Mention recognition last year.

Alo's junior campaign has seen her take her production to another level. She has reached base no fewer than 20 times and has a slugging percentage of 1.087. Alo is four-game multi-hit streak, including a 3-for-4 performance against Leilehua on March 11. She slugged a home run and a triple with three RBI and two runs scored that afternoon.

Just four days after that Alo went 2 for 2 with a double with two RBI and two runs scored in a win over Nanakuli. Alo was especially prolific in a pair of victories over Kapolei and previously-unbeaten Mililani last week.

In the 12-4 win over the then-No. 9 Hurricanes, Alo batted 3 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored. She followed that up with a 3-for-4 day to help the Sabers topple the top-ranked Trojans Saturday; Alo drove in two runs and scored twice and even stole her first two bases of the season.

"She's just a beast hitting, but she's also really good defensively, too," said Hermosura, who made a point to praise Alo's work ethic.

"Her hustle is better than any of the players I've had before and that's including her sister Lorraine. She comes close to Jocelyn's attitude and hustle. Sophie does everything for us and she's just a hard worker," Hermosura said.

After completing her Campbell career, Lorraine Alo went on to earn Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year honors at Portland State. Jocelyn Alo finished her decorated collegiate career at Oklahoma as the all-time NCAA leader in home runs, slugging percentage and total bases.

"She idolizes her sister Jocelyn and because of that she's been a leader for the rest of our players and has been very helpful toward helping the underclassmen with their hitting. She leads by example and the team follows her examples. I'd say because of her, our team will be going forward instead of backwards," Hermosura said.

Not only is Alo producing on the diamond, she's getting the job done in the classroom as well, as evidenced by her 3.8 grade point average. Alo's diligence extends to her role as a player much of her teammates look up to.

"She always picks up the other players when they make a mistake and she's very supportive in that way. She communicates well with others and does a lot of work giving back within the community, too," Hermosura said.

The win over defending state champion Mililani Saturday extended Campbell's winning streak to five games and put them in the tie with the Trojans atop the OIA Division I West standings with four games to play in the regular season.

"It's big for momentum, which is something that we thrive on and besides Kapolei, Mililani has been our nemesis, so beating them, the way they were playing, was really big for us," Hermosura expressed.

Alo and the Sabers (5-1) moved up three spots in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings to the No. 2 spot. They will look to keep the ball rolling when they take on No. 6 Leilehua on March 8.
