WAIPIO — In a matchup of undefeated teams, Greyson Osbun was at his best Tuesday afternoon.
Osbun, a senior pitcher, allowed one hit and three walks over five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts to lead No. 1 Kamehameha to an 8-0 win over No. 4 Damien in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park.
The Warriors (6-0) backed Osbun's stellar start with 10 hits to hand the Monarchs (5-1) their first loss of the season.
Osbun faced 18 batters — just three more than the minimum — and did not allow a baserunner beyond second base to log his second win of the year.
Kamehameha coach Daryl Kitagawa was pleased to see the University of Nevada-signee bounce back from a sub-par performance in his last outing, when Osbun surrendered four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings of work against Iolani seven days prior.
"He actually had a rough outing against Iolani — it wasn't his best — (but) this is the Greyson we know. Today he was outstanding," Kitagawa said of the All-Hawaii First Team selection from a year ago.
"He commanded the strike zone, he threw three, four pitches for strikes so it was his day today, but that's what we expect from him, so hats off to him. Good job by Greyson," Kitagawa added.
Osbun retired the first seven batters he faced before he allowed a five-pitch walk to Cade Lurito, the Monarchs' eighth hitter in the lineup. However, Osbun got the next batter, Kona Begonia, to line into an inning-ending double play to end the top of the third inning.
Osbun issued a walk to Nai Begonia to open the Damien fourth, but struck out Aaron Rapoza, then got Rydge Kohagura to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out before he set down Max Detrinis on a groundout to retire the side.
The only time Osbun allowed two runners on base was in the fifth, when he sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around the lone hit he allowed — a one-out single by Devin Dombrigues. Lurito drew his second base-on-balls of the afternoon to put two Monarchs aboard, but Osbun got Kona Begonia to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice to end the threat.
"I just wanted to be myself, play to my advantages and go with the game," Osbun said. "If they were putting the ball in play, then work with that and try to get outs that way and if they're not doing that and swinging and missing, then try and get as many strikeouts as possible. Just staying aggressive and understanding what they're trying to do and then using my strengths to counter them," Osbun said.
Osbun recorded three strikeouts looking. He tallied 17 swings and misses. He threw 48 of his 80 total pitches for strikes and registered first-pitch strikes to nine batters.
"My change-up was really good today, slider was really good and it worked well with the fastball and just keeping them off-balanced and getting tons of swings and misses," Osbun said.
He noted that he was eager to atone for the underwhelming performance he had against the Raiders one week prior.
"I was super excited (because) I think outings like those really teach you something, so coming back out here and being able to face one of the best teams record-wise at least in the ILH was super exciting and after I left that game on last week Tuesday, I was just looking forward to this one," Osbun expressed.
Osbun got all the run support he needed in the first few innings. The Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and plated two more runs in the second; they tallied four hits in each frame.
"We had a plan going in and that was to attack early, hit hard line drives — I mean, it should be like that every game — but moreso thinking that we'd see a lot of off-speed (pitches) and I mean, we were perfect, it was awesome to see," Kitagawa said.
Kamehameha first four batters — Logan Sanchez, Taj Uyehara, Kiai Sylvester and Dillon Andres — combined to hit 8 for 13; each of them paired hits. Andres brought in the game's first run with his one-out single through the left side of the infield that scored Sanchez. In the second inning, Andres added two more runs batted in with his single to shallow right field.
"It was good to see, especially when you talk about it, you try to implement it and then it comes to fruition, so it was great to see and hopefully we can continue that moving forward," Kitagawa said.
The Warriors added insurance runs in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead.
"Then after that we took our foot off the gas pedal or whatever the mentality is — I don't know what it is — but that's what we talked about postgame, but yeah, I mean, good job, we got some runs early, Greyson was tough, put ourselves in a good position to get the W today," Kitagawa said.
Aiden Kahele and Leka Naumu threw scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh innings in relief of Osbun.
Damien used three pitches in the loss. Sam Cezar-Kanakaole lasted just 2/3 of an inning and allowed four runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in his first start of the season. Tana Seguancia threw 3 1/3 innings and was tagged for four runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks before Makana Freitas struck out two batters and allowed one hit in two innings of work.
The Monarchs, who were coming off of a one-run win over Saint Louis Saturday in which they trailed 5-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, had rallied from behind in each of their last three games. They were seeking their first win over the Warriors since Apr. 13, 2018.
"They force you to beat them," Kitagawa said of Damien, the ILH's lone Division II representative.
"They're going to put the ball in play and put pressure on you, steal bases, but then when you get out to an early lead, it kind of diminishes what you're able to do, right — their game plan — so that was our thoughts coming in: just get up early and eliminate some of the stuff that they want to do, but I've admired from afar what they're doing with their club and I have just the utmost respect for how they're playing and how they're competing in the league this year," Kitagawa added.
Meanwhile, Kamehameha is now the lone remaining unbeaten in the private-school league and holds a three-game lead on the trio of Saint Louis, PAC-5 and Punahou for first place in the ILH D1 standings near the midpoint of the regular season.
"I love where we are to be honest, but we got a lot more games coming up and we're preparing ourselves for each and every game," Kitagawa said.
The Warriors next face the Crusaders Thursday at CORP before they meet Mid-Pacific Saturday at Ala Wai Field.
The Monarchs will look to bounce back against PAC-5 Thursday, 3 p.m. at Ala Wai.
