Kaiser shuts down Roosevelt to tighten up race atop OIA East standings

On a night when they absolutely needed to, the Cougars ate.

Kaiser scored two first half goals to take control, added another in the second, and saw its defense do its part to keep a clean sheet, the final result being a 3-0 win over Roosevelt.

"We knew if we didn't win this game it was basically no chance for us (to get a good seed). We would end up like fourth or fifth in the East, so we really needed this win," said Ethan Yang, who factored into all three Kaiser goals. "Our coaches were stressing all the way up to the game, so we did good."

Kaiser remain tied with atop the East Division standings with a single defeat, but dropping another game would have been essentially fatal in terms of seeding for the league playoffs.

From the opening minute, the home team looked sharp, consistently winning possession, pressing on offense and converting defense stop into opportunities via the long ball.

That aggression paid dividends quickly, as Yang lined up for direct free kick in the 20th minute from about 20 yards out and struck an absolute laser of a shot that tucked beautifully into the top right corner of the goal for the game's opening score.

"I've been missing free kicks all this season and last season, so finally getting one felt really nice," said Yang of the play. "In practice, we spent like 30 minutes just hitting those and I had that spot right at practice, too. So I had the steps down, got the routine and just put it away."

The score was the first of the season for the senior midfielder, who has made a career of operating mainly as a playmaker for the Cougars.

Four minutes later, it was Yang again, this time setting up Isaac Davies with a slick cross on a set piece that made it 2-0 in favor of the Cougars.

Spotted a two goal margin, Kaiser definitely fed off of that positive momentum on both ends, as the Rough Riders were simply unable to get much going in the attacking half in the first 40 minutes.

The second half saw Kaiser continue to apply pressure on the Rough Riders' back line, but just couldn't seek out a third score, until the 76th minute, when Yang lofted a perfect ball that found the foot of Tayte Sato, who deftly put the ball past the keeper to all but shut the door.

Davies and Sato each added to their team leading goal total, and they've collectively combined for 26 of the teams' 36.

What might have been more impressive than the expected offensive output was the Cougars' defense, in particular keeper Kaiea McKillop, who stopped four shots and often ventured aggressively at the edge of the box or beyond to make plays with his feet. His ability to put air and distance on punts also helped shift the field, and on a few occasions, turned into potential chances in the attacking half.

"It's great, yeah, his punts, absolutely like, give us time, give us space, tries to reset," said Yang of McKillop. "He's really aggressive when he comes out, clears the ball, but even when Peter (Vahsen) comes in, we have confidence in him and he can he can step up just as well."

Prior to the match with the Cougars, the Rough Riders had scored at least once in every game this season.

The best chance at a goal for Roosevelt came in the 76th minute on a free kick taken from the left side, but Alex Lau's well-struck ball skidded just left of the near post.

Kaiser can all but lock up the top seed out of the East with a win on Wednesday against perennial rival Kalani.

The Cougars last win over the Falcons came in a the form of a 1-0 result in a consolation match during state tournament play back in 2022.

"We play them every year, and we haven't beat them since my freshman year," remarked Yang. "So yeah, we're just gonna go all out in last rivalry (game) for my era (as a senior)."
