South Florida outlasts San Jose State in overtime to win Hawaii Bowl

In a game that spanned more than four hours and went to five overtimes, South Florida outlasted San Jose State to win the Hawaii Bowl, 41-39.

John Cannon knocked through a 41 yard field goal with two seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and the two teams traded touchdowns and field goals prior to the third overtime period, when teams are then forced to attempt only two-point conversions.

Both teams converted two-point tries in the third OT, but neither team was successful in the fourth, forcing a five try at overtime, where Bryce Archie found Keshaun Singleton on pass attempt to put the Bulls up 41-39. On the Spartans' attempt to force yet another period of OT, Walker Eget's pass to Justin Lockhart fell incomplete, putting an end to the marathon of a game.

The Bulls led 14-0 midway through the second quarter, and extended the lead to 21-7 on a 93 yard kickoff return by Ta'Ron Keith with 1:53 left until the half. San Jose State rallied with 13 unanswered in the third, and took the lead for the first time in the contest on a 5 yard pass from Eget to Jackson Canaan that made it 27-24 with 11:14 to play.

South Florida QB Archie completed 24 of 35 passes for 235 yards, and Sean Atkins had 11 catches for 104 yards, a team high. A trio of ball carriers scored on the ground, Kelley Joiner, Nay'Quan Wright and Keith.

The Bulls were held to just 56 yards on 34 carries.

Eget led the San Jose State passing attack, completing 33 of 58 passes for 280 and two scores. Matthew Coleman had 12 receptions for 119 yards and a score. The Spartans' ground game netted 161 yards, led by Lamar Radcliffe and Floyd Chalk, who combined for 30 carries and 125 yards and two scores.

Former Kaiser standout Kyler Halvorsen was 4 for 4 on PATs and booted through field goals from 42, 22 and 24 yards out, accounting for 13 points for the Spartans.
