Baldwin's Perry-Waikiki, Lahainaluna's Donez win annual Newcomer Award

Now in its tenth season, the Pizza Hut Newcomer is awarded for superior performance by a male and a female student-athlete participating in their FIRST FULL YEAR of play in varsity athletics.

This year's winners are:

In 34 1/3 innings, Perry-Waikiki allowed just 16 hits and five earned runs with 29 strikeouts to just three walks. The 5-foot-9 right-hander logged four complete games in Maui Interscholastic League play, including a no-hitter against Kamehameha-Maui in mid-April. Perry-Waikiki was the lone freshman selected as an All-Hawaii Division I First Team performer.

The senior guard made a successful return to her hometown of Lahaina with a spectacular season that saw her earn All-Hawaii Division I Player of the Year honors. Donez averaged nearly 27 points per game against Maui Interscholastic League competition, including a season-high 43-point outing against Kekaulike. She set a new single-game state tournament record with 41 points against Waiakea in the quarterfinal round. Donez will play at the University of California, Berkeley next year.
