Koa Laboy scored 20 points and added seven boards to pace University Lab to a 53-44 win over Campbell on the final day of the McKinley Black and Gold Classic, a contest that pitted two state tourney runners-up from a year ago against each other.

"They are a very good team and I think it was a good test for us," said Ahu of the win over the Sabers.

The Junior Bows won all three games over the span of three days at Student Council Gymnasium, which included a 55-52 win over Beckman and a 56-37 rout of Roosevelt.

In those contests, the leading scorer for each was a different player, with Kenna Quitan scoring 18 against the Patriots and Alika Ahu notching 22 to lead the way against the Rough Riders.

"We've got very talented guys that can all score but also play defense," said Laboy. "It shows that everyone on our team knows their role and some nights someone might have more than the other but at the end of the day its all about the team."

The game deceptively appeared to be controlled by University Lab, who trailed only once, when a Miles Hornage basket put Campbell up 4-3 early in the first quarter. The Junior Bows led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but the Sabers continued to hang around, closing the third on a 12-5 scoring run to make it a six point game heading into the final quarter.

Hornage continued to have the hot hand to open the fourth, scoring six quick points to tie the game up, before the Junior Bows rallied, going on an 8-0 spurt of their own sparked by two big baskets by Ahu, one from up close and the other a long distance triple.

"The main thing was to get it inside, catch it on the high post," said Laboy. "They were playing a zone and we've got three big guys to crash the boards (on missed shots)."

From there, the lead built briefly to double digits once more before Josh Ellis hit a basket plus the foul to trim it back to eight. Quitan hit one of two free throws in the waning seconds to make the final margin nine.

University Lab held a decided advantage in assists (14 to 5) and blocks (8 to 1), but Campbell narrowly won the rebound battle, 28-27.

Trey Ambrozich grabbed seven of University Lab's rebounds and six of its blocks, while chipping in nine points and four assists in an all-around effort.

"Trey is a very good luxury to have behind you," said Laboy of Ambrozich. "He basically gets every rebound that comes his way and if we play it on the high post and someone throws it over the top we know he's there to block it."

University High's frontline trio of Ambrozich, Laboy and Ahu accounted for 19 of the team's 27 boards and all eight blocks.

The Sabers hit more threes (4 ro 3) and registered more steals (8 to 6) in defeat, but shot just 33% from the field and 26% from three.

Hornage did most of his damage in the second half, with 14 of his 20 points and two of his three treys coming after halftime. Jordan Kernaghan muscled his way to 10 points and a team-high five boards as the other Saber to reach double-digits.

Free throw shooting was an issue for the Junior Bows, as they hit on just 6 of 19 of them, including 10 misses in the second half that could have made the margin a lot more comfortable.
