MAKIKI—Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw three touchdown passes and the Campbell secondary had timely interceptions in the fourth as the third-ranked Sabers held off No. 6 Kapolei, 30-27, in the OIA Open Division third place game at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Sagapolutele threw for 314 yards on 19-of-33 passing, three touchdowns and overcame three interceptions in the win as the Sabers (9-3 overall, 7-2 OIA) reached the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division Football State Championships for the fourth season in a row.

After Mililani (10-1 overall, 8-0 OIA) dethroned Kahuku (10-2 overall, 7-1 OIA), 28-21 for the OIA Open Division title, the Sabers meet the Trojans again, this time in the first round on Friday, Nov. 17 at John Kauinana Stadium at 4 p.m.

Kapolei trailed, 30-20 with 10:18 to go in the fourth and went on a 12-play drive down to the Saber 19. Nazaiah Caravallo-Lawelawe intercepted the pass, but fumbled to give Kapolei a fresh set of downs. Three plays after the pick, Liatama Amisone threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Halai Kamohalii and Hurley Kennedy's kick made it, 30-27.

Rowen-Ray Bucao accounted for 35 receiving yards on the next possession and James Steffany-Fiame got down to the Kapolei 19. The Hurricanes forced a turnover on downs and took over with 4:21 left in the fourth. Amisone gained a yard and completed two passes to Tristen Inay for 12 yards but Kela Moore intercepted Amisone at the 2:47 mark.

Steffany-Fiame gained 7 yards and Sagapolutele converted a key third-and-3 with a 7-yard pass to Zayden Alviar-Costa, who caught seven passes for 104 yards. Kapolei called it's final timeout with 58 seconds left. The Sabers were able to take two knees to run out the rest of the time.

Amisone threw for 287 yards on 27-of-43 passing, one score and three picks and added 72 rushing yards on 13 attempts and a score in the season-ending defeat.

"Tama is the first quarterback in the history of Hawaii to have more than 1,000 yards on the ground and through the air. It was pretty amazing," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said of Amisone.

The Hurricanes were seeking its first state tournament appearance since 2016 and ended their season 8-4 overall, 6-3 in the OIA.

"We all made some mistakes here and there. The kids played their heart out. I'm proud of the their effort, I love these young men. They worked hard everyday. It's a shame our season has to end but credit Campbell. They made plays when they had to," Hernandez said.

Kapolei opened the game with a 15-play, 80 yard drive, four of those plays were pass attempts and the rest were on the ground. The Hurricanes came away with a 7-0 lead following Vaimetua Kamakele's 1-yard run.

Sagapolutele was picked off by Kaikoa Iokia and four plays later, Kapolei redeemed the turnover into a 26-yard field goal from Hurley Kennedy for a 10-0 lead.

"There were a lot of interceptions by both quarterbacks tonight. The defenses played well and stiffened up. I'm proud of the guys, we didn't make it where we thought were going to be but both teams came in 8-3 and ranked in the top 10, the highest both teams ever have been meeting between the two teams," Hernandez said.

Sagapolutele shrugged off the turnover and hit Bucao in stride for a 65-yard strike. Bucao finished with four passes for 113 yards.

"He came in clutch for us. We needed that big-play touchdown and that got us the momentum and we started going forward from there," Sagapolutele said.

Campbell forced a three-and-out and Aisiah Paogofie's 41-yard return set up the Sabers on the 18. Three plays later, Sagapolutele threw a 16-yard score to Alviar-Costa but the kick was no good to lead, 13-10.

Kapolei responded with a seven-play scoring drive and during that drive a Hurricane offensive lineman and a Campbell defensive linemen were ejected. Amisone rushed for a 42-yard touchdown for a 17-13 lead that held up until halftime.

"This week my whole o-line and me were sick. We're still a little sick, but it's not an excuse," Sagapolutele said.

The Hurricane secondary almost forced another turnover but Makana Taylor's interception in the end zone was nullified by a holding penalty. Five plays after the penalty, Campbell retook the lead, 20-17 after Bucao caught a 13-yard score from Sagapolutele.

"I took the easy routes. They took it all the way to the house," Sagapolutele said.

On their next offensive drive, Kapolei benefitted from a pair of pass interference penalties. Amisone went 5 for 6 passing for 39 yards to get into the red zone and the Hurricanes settled for a 34-yard field goal from Kennedy to tie the game at 20.

Campbell's offense overcame back-to-back sacks from PJ Freitas. Staring down a third-and-28, Sagapolutele completed a 33-yard pass to Alviar-Costa for the first down. He completed two more passes for 15 yards and Steffany-Fiame rushed for a 5-yard touchdown for a 27-20 lead.

"Their quarterback had an amazing game again even though he turned it over a couple times. He bailed them out with some big throws, none bigger than that third-and-28, after two sacks, he hit a screen for a first down for 33 yards for a first down. That was the play of the game and when they converted on that third down," Hernandez said of Sagapolutele.

Amisone converted a third down with a 10-yard run and went to Nikko Smith twice for 41 yards down to the Campbell 23. Isaiah Chong intercepted Amisone and returned it 67 yards and four plays later, Wyckstandt made a 23-yard field goal to make it, 30-20, with 10:18 in the fourth.

"Our defense is amazing and thank them for helping us out when we couldn't put it in the end zone," Sagapolutele said.

Campbell lost to Mililani 55-37 on Oct. 28 in the playoff semifinals.

On the other side of the state tournament bracket, ILH champion and second seed Punahou (7-2 overall) faces the Red Raiders in the Nov. 17 nightcap at 7 p.m.
