KALIHI — There was no slowing down the Sabers Friday night.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele passed for 377 yards and factored into four touchdowns to lead No. 2 Campbell to a 42-13 rout of No. 12 Farrington before a crowd of about 1,100 fans on a cool evening at Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field.

The Sabers (6-1) racked up 484 yards of total offense, including 428 through the air and limited the Governors (3-2) to a season-low 65 rushing yards and 185 total yards.

Campbell's defense corralled Farrington's 238-pound running back Sitani Mikaele to a 49 yards on 16 carries, an average of just 3.1 yards per rush. Mikaele entered the game averaging seven yards a pop.

The Govs were 6 of 14 on third downs and finished with a dozen first downs to the Sabers' 25.

Seven of Farrington's nine offensive possessions ended with a punt.

"The defense is always stepping up every week and making us better in practice (and) we make them better in practice, so I think we're just working as a team and just thankful our defense is making stops to get us back on the field," said Sagapolutele, who completed 24 of his 34 pass attempts to seven different receivers — none of them, Tana Togafau-Tavui.

The Sabers played their third consecutive game without Togafau-Tavui, last year's All-OIA Open Division Offensive Player of the Year. In his absence, Sagapolutele spread the wealth around. Rusten Bang led the way with seven catches for 117 yards, while Caysean Melvin (3 for 105), Rowen-Ray Bucao (4 for 85), Falaniko Scanlan (2 for 37) and Zayden Alviar-Costa (5 for 35) each came down with a touchdown reception.

Sagapolutele, who was sacked just once on the night, credited the offensive line for its work up front, which allowed him to go through his progressions in the passing game.

"They work their butts off in practice, they put in extra hours before and after practice on putting, putting in the time for lifting. I'm just thankful that they were able to give me four, five, even six seconds in the pocket whenever I need to throw," said Sagapolutele, who completed his first six passes.

The Sabers aired it out exclusively on their first drive. Sagapolutele went 5 for 5 on the possession, which covered 85 yards and culminated with his 35-yard touchdown pass to Scanlan on a well-executed screen play.

After Campbell got on the board just 73 seconds into the game, Farrington appeared to have tied it just two plays from scrimmage later with a long touchdown pass from Mark Moreno to Chansen Smith. However, a penalty for an ineligible receiver downfield wiped away the 60-yard TD pass and the Govs' drive eventually stalled and resulted in a punt.

Campbell came up empty on its next three drives. Sagapolutele was intercepted, then the Sabers turned it over on downs inside the Farrington 5-yard line before it went three-and-out and punted away.

James Steffany-Fiame dragged a pair of defenders across the goal line to finish off his 15-yard TD run to double-up the Campbell lead with 7:05 left in the first half.

The Govs retaliated with a 10-play, 65-yard drive that took 5:34 off the clock and included a pair of third-down conversions. They polished off the possession with a 3-yard TD run by Mikaele on a direct snap out. Jacob Talamoa tacked on the extra point to cut it to a 14-7 Campbell lead with 1:31 until the break.

Sagapolutele and the Sabers got the score board about a minute later. He hit a crossing Bucao over the middle for a 40-yard TD pass that capped off a five-play, 70-yard drive. Cristian Wyckstandt's PAT gave the Sabers a 21-7 lead going into the intermission.

The southpaw quarterback noted that the score just before halftime was key to taking momentum back from the Govs.

"That was the score we needed," Sagapolutele said. "Against Punahou we were down 16-0 and right before halftime we scored and I think it just gets everyone's energy up and we just come out hot with the energy, so it's always good to score before the half."

Campbell padded its lead with touchdowns on its first three second-half possessions. It finished a 12-play, 71-yard drive with Sagapolutele's 1-yard TD run that came at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter.

Sagapolutele's 7-yard scoring strike to Alviar-Costa two plays into the fourth quarter stretched it to a 35-7 cushion. He gave way after that to backup quarterback Donny Faavi Jr., who connected with Caysean Melvin for a 45-yard TD pass about midway through the final period.

Farrington got a late score on a 20-yard TD pass from reserve quarterback Noah Spencer to Mikaele.

The Govs played without defensive end Anelu Lafaele, a University of Wisconsin commit. Sagapolutele said that Lafaele's absence made things just a little easier for Campbell's offense to operate Friday night.

"I think it played a big factor. Obviously he's the best defensive linemen in the state, so it played a big factor for our o-line because that was one less thing we had to worry about, so I think we were able to just run the ball good, pass the ball good and we didn't have any pressure in my face," Sagapolutele said.

Campbell will have a bye next week before it visits Carleton E. Weimer Field on Oct. 7 for a highly-anticipated matchup against top-ranked Kahuku.

"They're coming off a hot win (over St. John Bosco) and I think they're expecting us to come out hot too, so I think that it's just gonna be the true test to see where we're at and I'm excited for that," Sagapolutele said.

Farrington will look to bounce back when it takes on Aiea at Radford's John E. Velasco Stadium Friday night.
