Camren Flemister had a pair of rushing touchdowns and Cole Northington added another in No. 15 Leilehua's 21-7 win over Moanalua at Na Menehune's field Friday.
The Mules rushed for a net 234 yards and improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in OIA play.
"It's surreal, we're coming off a 0-7-1 season so to see the team bond and be cohesive and come out like that was amazing. It's fun to see the team succeed but we don't want to be complacent. We have fun for tonight and get back into the lab Saturday," Northington said.
Na Menehune fell to 0-2 overall, 0-1 in the OIA.
Northington rushed for 138 yards on 16 carries and Flemister finished with 12 carries for 110 yards. Hanohano Plunkett threw for 135 yards on 14-of-23 passing and was intercepted once and Timothy Arnold led all receivers with nine catches for 78 yards.
"Our running game is a strong piece. All credit to our line. Our line is amazing. That opened up some passing lanes and Timothy Arnold out there with some slant passes, I feel like it opens up a lot of things," Northington said.
Naazsir Addo McCoy took the pooch kick 50 yards to set up Moanalua at Leilehua's 10-yard line. Tayden Evan Kaawa found Jayce Bareng (6 receptions, 36 yards) alone in the corner of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal for a 7-0 lead.
Kaawa took a hard hit on a rush attempt that drew a helmet-to-helmet penalty 5:00 to go in the first quarter and did not return.
McCoy finished the game at quarterback and went 15 of 26, 120 yards and was picked off three times.
Kaui Nakamoto's interception helped the Mules tie up the game on Flemister's 67-yard touchdown run.
Leilehua's opportunistic defense struck again as Matteus Ioane recovered Reshod Scott's fumble and the Mules took the lead on Northington's 38-yard touchdown run and never looked back. The Mules held Na Menehune to 191 yards of total offense and five takeaways.
"Our defense is out of this world. We have Matteus Ioane in the middle and Josh Simbre, who won player of the game on the edge. All those guys come together and they're best friends off the field," Northington noted.
Moanalua started their drive on their own 49 and got down to the Leilehua 1 but Kevin Burke picked off McCoy in the end zone. Na Menehune would get the ball back after Xjaduss Sefo's fumble recovery. McCoy completed passes to Kila Keone and Kama Corales to get down to the Mules' 12, but ended the half with three-straight incompletions to come away empty-handed.
Keone had five catches for 64 yards and Corales with five receptions for 47 yards.
Flemister punched in a 2-yard touchdown for insurance with 4:27 left in the fourth quarter.
Josh Simbre led the Mules defense with 7.5 tackles and a pair of sacks and Makuakai Ruiz added a pair of sacks. Jordan Tugaoen had three tackle-for-losses and a fumble recovery.
Tanner Pangan led Moanalua's defense with 6.5 tackles, Josiah Kahue-Antone added six tackles, and Daniel Bittle with five tackles and a sack.
Leilehua hosts No. 4 Campbell on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 6:30 pm, while Moanalua takes on No. 2 Punahou at Alexander Field in a non-league contest earlier that afternoon.
