KAPOLEI — Keola Apduhan found the end zone early and often Saturday night.

Apduhan, a senior running back, ran for 115 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries to lead No. 5 Saint Louis to a 42-28 road win over No. 7 Kapolei in a non-league game at the Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex.

A crowd of about 1,500 fans saw the Crusaders (1-0) roll up 475 yards of total offense to hold off the host Hurricanes (0-1).

It was the season opener for both teams and the first for Saint Louis since Cal Lee, the state's winningest prep football coach, retired as its defensive coordinator, a role he served in for the last few years under his brother and current Crusaders coach Ron Lee.

"I'm just happy with how we played. The kids played hard," Ron Lee said. "It was a tough game — we need that, it's not easy — but we got a lot of things we need to tighten up. We gotta get back to the drawing boards."

Quarterback Kaunaoa Kamakawiwoole threw for 311 yards on 21-of-34 passing and a touchdown, but was intercepted on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, including one that was returned 41 yards for a touchdown by Kaipo Tautala-Kupukaa-Takasugi that got Kapolei on the board after Apduhan capped Saint Louis' first two drives touchdown runs.

Apduhan opened the scoring with a 3-yard TD scamper that finished off a 15-play, 75-yard scoring drive that included four third-down conversions for the Crusaders.

Kapolei put together a 12-play possession of its own in an attempt to answer the Saint Louis score, but saw the drive stall just outside of the red zone on a turnover on downs.

Saint Louis countered with a nine-play, 78-yard drive that culminated with a 9-yard TD run that saw Apduhan go untouched into the end zone to give his team a 14-0 lead with 10:02 left in the second quarter.

A few minutes after the Hurricanes' pick 6, Kamakawiwoole connected with Titan Lacaden on a 14-yard TD pass on a third down. Makena Kauai added the extra point and the Crusaders held a 21-7 lead at the half.

However, Kapolei got a jolt of energy to start the second half with Kainoa Kamohalii's 98-yard touchdown return for touchdown that cut it to a one-score game.

Saint Louis got some separation when it sandwiched two more Apduhan TD runs around a turnover on downs from its defense to thwart another long Kapolei drive.

Apduhan's 3-yard TD run capped his team's first second-half possession and made it 28-14, then Vince Tautua sacked Kapolei's Liatama Amisone on a fourth down. The Crusaders got the ball back at their own 38-yard line after the turnover on downs, but was eventually forced to punt away. However, the punt was muffed by a Hurricane returner and it was recovered by Lacaden to give Saint Louis possession inside the Kapolei 10-yard line.

Two plays later Apduhan punched in his fourth touchdown from a yard out to extend the Crusaders' cushion to 35-14.

Kapolei had an answer with a 4-yard TD pass from Amisone to Kamohalii that was set-up by a 69-yard hook-up from the same duo two plays prior. Midway through the fourth quarter, Amisone found Halai Kamohalii up the right seam for a 28-yard TD pass to finish off a 11-play, 90-yard drive. Hurley Kennedy's PAT pulled the ‘Canes to within 35-28 with 5:57 to play.

Saint Louis was able to convert a key third-and-17 on its ensuing drive with a 23-yard pitch-and-catch from Kamakawiwoole to Lacaden for 23 yards. It added an insurance score with Billy Duarte's 3-yard TD run four plays later to again make it a two-score game with 1:24 remaining.

The Crusaders posted 164 rushing yards and averaged 4.8 yards per carry. Apduhan averaged 6.1 per rush and was only dropped behind the line of scrimmage once.

"We might have to run him 30 times the way he's running," Lee said of Apduhan, "but we're trying to get a balanced attack with our passing, so we've got a lot of things to work on."

Apduhan said should that need arise, he would most certainly be up to the task.

"Oh, hell yeah," he proclaimed. "Any day."

In addition to opening running lanes for Apduhan and the run game, the Crusaders' offensive line protected Kamakawiwoole to the tune of just one Kapolei sack.

"I feel good after this game. We made some mistakes, but it's all stuff that we can fix at practice and the sky is the limit for this team," Apduhan said. "We're a young team, but we're ready to go, we're fired up and ready for the season."

Saint Louis tallied 29 first downs, including 15 via rush. It converted on 11 of 12 third downs and was 1 for 1 on fourth downs.

Kapolei was 5 of 11 on third downs and 1 for 4 on fourth downs. It recorded 11 of its 17 first downs through the air.

Amisone finished 20-of-38 passing for 235 yards and two touchdowns. He was not intercepted. Amisone finished as his team's leading rusher with 54 yards on 12 carries.

"We gotta get a lot better. We're depending on our defense," Lee said. "We didn't do a very good job of containing the quarterback. The quarterback did a nice job of scrambling and making plays. We gotta do a better job of coaching and keeping the quarterbacks in the pocket — most of his success came on the roll-outs and we weren't there."

Kaina Kamohalii recorded 329 all-purpose yards. He caught 11 passes for 131 yards, added six kickoff returns for 195 yards and also played defensive back for most of the contest.

"I thought Kapolei did a nice job of preparation and we made some mistakes, but we gotta correct those mistakes," Lee reiterated.

Jordan Nunuha had six receptions for 134 yards, Lacaden finished with seven grabs for 84 yards and Sytyn Lasconia chipped in with five catches for 66 yards for the Crusaders, who will visit No. 1 Kahuku next Saturday before playing its next two games in the state of Nevada, against Liberty (Aug. 25) and Desert Pines (Sept. 1).

The Hurricanes will look to rebound when they host Radford (0-1) Saturday.
