Panis pulled through for Na Alii in key win; Warriors' Kupihea producing with positivity

Brennen Panis

Aiea baseball  •   #13

Aiea baseball coach Wes Yoshida can usually breathe a sigh of relief when he hands the ball to Brennen Panis.

Panis, a junior right-handed pitcher/infielder, has put together a solid season on the mound for Na Alii. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Panis is 3-0 on the year with a 0.98 earned run average. He had arguably his best outing of the spring Saturday, when he logged a complete-game, three-hit shutout of visiting Mililani to lift his team to a much-needed 4-0 win on senior day.

"It was the situation we put him in and he handled it very well," Yoshida said. "It was our senior game and we chose him to do it because we knew that he could do it and he did a great job keeping us in the game, especially against a good team like Mililani."

Panis threw 60 of his 89 total pitches for strikes. He registered three strikeouts, but more importantly, did not walk a batter.

"He works fast and he was throwing a lot of strikes, no matter if it was his fastball, his split finger or his slider, he was pretty much on it. I mean, he held them to three hits and that was really impressive," Yoshida said.

Panis worked out of a few jams, including the top of the first inning, when the Trojans had several runners reach base. Yoshida noted that Panis worked his way back from a few three-ball counts.

"He's the kind of kid that won't just give up. He's a quiet kid, but his work ethic is spot on. We don't have to remind him to hustle, to go ‘game speed,' everything to him is game speed," Yoshida said.

Against Mililani Saturday, Panis's command was especially excellent, his coach described.

"It was like no matter what we wanted him to throw — his curve ball, his splitter — he was on it. It was like he couldn't miss and coming from him, he said, ‘This is the best he ever felt.' I was thinking about taking him out (after the sixth inning) and putting in our closer, but he really wanted it and said, ‘Coach, I got this,' " Yoshida said.

As a sophomore last year, Panis went 2-0 on the mound with a 1.73 ERA and split his time between pitcher and third base.

Yoshida said that Panis, who first joined the varsity team as a freshman, can also play second base or shortstop.

"He's pretty skilled wherever he plays. Last year he played third, but he can play anywhere on the infield. Pitching-wise, he's probably our ace right now. He throws mid 80s, gets up to 86-87 (miles per hour)," said Yoshida, who added that Panis has worked diligently to improve his ability to pitch deeper into games.

"In the past he would have arm problems. He would pitch a complete game and would be out of shape where his arm would be sore, (but) this year he made it a point to get stronger and he has two complete games, which is a plus coming from him because he's one of our key players," Yoshida said.

Panis also went the distance in a 3-0 win over Kapolei on Apr. 1. He gave up just two hits and two walks and struck out five batters in 101 pitches thrown against the Hurricanes. In his other win this spring — a 9-4 victory over Nanakuli on Apr. 8 — Panis struck out a season-high five batters. He allowed a single earned run on three hits with two walks in five innings of work against the Golden Hawks.

Panis also has a save this year. He has logged 21 2/3 innings and allowed 10 hits with 10 walks and 16 strikeouts. But his value extends beyond the mound, as he also bats third in the lineup.

"He's consistent. He's someone I can count on to do the job, whether it's moving them over, or driving them in, hit-and-run or even bunt," Yoshida said. "He hits with power. He can actually spray the ball very well and can go (to the opposite field) very well — in fact, he has an oppo-home run this season."

Consistency might be Panis's best trait; flashiness isn't among his known commodities.

"He's just an all-around ball player. He's a quiet kid, he's opened up a little more as he got older, but he's still quiet, keeps to himself, just an all-around good kid," Yoshida expressed.

Aiea's season got off to a rocky start. It was 1-4 after five games in OIA Division I West play, but reeled off a string of four consecutive wins to get above .500 on the year with a record of 5-4. However, its winning streak came to an end at the hands of first-place Campbell by a score of 6-4 last Wednesday, which made the win over the Trojans — who entered the weekend in second place behind the Sabers — all that more important.

"The win was extremely big, it gives the kids a boost of confidence," said Yoshida, whose squad lost its first meeting against Mililani, 8-2, back on March 22nd.

"Our first half of the season went really bad, so we kinda turned it around this second half of the season, but the win was big because Mililani has had our number for a while," Yoshida added.

Panis and Na Alii improved to 6-5 with the win, but suffered a 5-2 loss to Leilehua Tuesday afternoon to finish out the regular season with an even 6-6 record.

Both the Mules and Trojans sit at 6-5 with one game to play and could knock Aiea out of contention from a coveted second-place finish, which includes a first-round bye in next week's 12-team OIA Division I tournament.

Makena Kupihea

Kapaa softball  •   #8  C/SS  Junior

There's not a whole lot keeping Makena Kupihea down. To say that the Kapaa junior is a glass-half-full type of person would be an understatement.

Kupihea's optimism, like her .500 batting average, is perpetually high. It's what makes the 5-foot-7 second-year starter a special one for the defending Division II state champion Warriors.

"Her positive attitude, her ability to keep engaged in the game and also be able to lift other people up when there might be down spirits or when people are coming off errors, she picks people up well," Kapaa coach Blair Yamashita said of Kupihea, a utility infielder who has taken over as the team's primary starting catcher this spring.

Kupihea's positivity helped the Warriors navigate a particularly tumultuous start to the season that saw its former coach step down following a 13-10 loss to Kauai to open the KIF season. That's when Yamashita stepped in to right the ship, but just a week after the loss to the Red Raiders, Kapaa was on the receiving end of a 21-2 throttling at the hands of Waimea.

It was the first meeting between the Warriors and Menehunes since the squads faced off for the Division II state title on Maui to cap the 2022 season. Unlike that game, when Kapaa trumped with a 13-5 win over Waimea, their first face-off of 2023 was hardly competitive.

"That was our first game with a new coaching staff and they kicked our teeth in pretty good," Yamashita recalled.

The Warriors recovered with a doubleheader sweep of Kauai three days later, but then were dealt a couple of mercy-rule loss by Waimea a week later. Since then, however, they have reeled off four straight wins to improve to 6-4 in the league standings with two games to play.

"We've emphasized staying together as a team and we can only do and control what we can control, so everything else that has happened, that's behind us and going forward we just want to be one percent better than the day before," Yamashita said.

"Our girls come to practice, work hard every day, seeking to improve and that's paying off now, not just in the results on the softball field, but also in their development as young women and student-athletes," he added.

Yamashita noted that the team's progression has somewhat mirrored Kupihea's growth over the course of the season.

"She kind of became a regular starter about the fourth game and her development and her improvement throughout the season has definitely been in line and kind of parallels the type of season we're having, where we started a little bit slow and we're improving day by day and week by week. I think a lot of our suggests does rely heavily on her. A lot of our pitching staff, having her behind the plate, it instills confidence in them because they know they can be a little bit off and she'll make a stop and be a wall back there for them," Yamashita explained.

Kupihea, whose nickname amongst teammates is ‘Wiggy,' is riding a four-game hitting streak, including a three-RBI day in last Wednesday's 14-9 win over previously-unbeaten Waimea. Her lone hit of the day was a home run, but Kupihea — who typically bats seventh in the lineup — also walked twice and scored a total of three runs.

Yamashita was keen to point out Kupihea's contributions in the monumental win over the Menehunes.

"That Waimea game, the score wasn't indicative of how close that game was. It was important for us to keep rallies going, especially in the bottom half of the lineup and she's kind of that bridge which helps us get back to the top, so she's vitally important and the contributions she makes might not reflect statistically, but not letting those (pitches) get past is huge," Yamashita said.

When Kupihea is not behind the plate, she is typically at either middle infield position. She finished out her sophomore season as the team's starting right fielder.

"She's been very reliable at catcher so when we can, we put her back there behind the dish just because we have full confidence in her behind there," Yamashita said. "She's got a very solid skillset. She reads ground balls well, she has an above average arm for field and as a catcher she's athletic. She's still pretty raw, but she makes great plays and she has a natural instinct for the ball."

Kupihea's bat stayed hot over the weekend. She went 6 for 7 with five runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of Kauai Saturday. In the first game, she was a perfect 3 for 3 with three doubles, two RBI and a run scored. In the nightcap, Kupihea batted 3 for 4 with another double and four runs scored; She also walked and stole a base.

Yamashita also noted that Kupihea caught both games of the doubleheader.

"Catching takes a lot out of your legs, so to be able to have that mental fortitude and then do well (hitting) at the plate, that was important for us and our pitchers were definitely thankful that she was back there," he said.

Much like her play on the field, Kupihea's positive attitude has remained consistent throughout the season.

"Even though she's not an official captain, she definitely has a leadership role on the team," Yamashita affirmed. "She's very positive in the dugout, she's often the loudest voice in the dugout, which brings energy to our team whether we're on the offensive side or defensive side of the ball."

Kupihea and the Warriors close out the KIF season with a doubleheader against Waimea at home Saturday. Game times are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
