Matt Mokan put down 24 kills with 10 digs to help host Hawaii Baptist fend off Mid-Pacific in four sets Thursday night at the Dan Liu Gymnasium in an ILH Division I second round match.
Set scores were 25-17, 28-26, 21-25 and 25-17.
The Eagles (4-5) move on to face Kamehameha (7-1) next Monday while the Owls (0-9) will await the winner between Punahou (6-3) and Iolani (5-4) next Thursday in the league's second round, which is a double-elimination tournament.
HBA coach Teoni Obrey is hoping to build off the win as the next round of play continues.
"This whole year we've been dealing with a lot of adversity and challenges that came our way. We never really got into a good rhythm so we're looking forward for the playoffs and hopefully we can regain some confidence for the stretch run."
Middle Presley Longfellow added 14 kills, Jordon Qin had eight more and Jackson Lincoln had seven kills to round out the top attackers for the Eagles.
Lincoln also had 18 assists running HBA's 6-2 offense with Kamden Kaneshiro-Takeuchi (28 assists). Libero Caleb Nishimura led all players in the back row with a match-high 16 digs.
Peter Miocinovic led Mid-Pacific in the loss with 21 kills and Kalanikapu Aona followed with 10 kills. Cole Kodama was at the controls for the Owls with 39 assists.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair until the Eagles pulled away down the stretch, scoring the last seven points of the frame with Lincoln at the service line.
The Owls took control midway through the second set and forced an HBA timeout after a pair of hitting errors gave Mid-Pacific a 15-13 lead. The Eagles then started to work Longfellow more into the offense and took a 19-18 lead after he had back-to-back kills.
Mid-Pacific battled back however and took a 21-19 lead after an error by Longfellow to prompt another HBA timeout. A hitting error into the net gave HBA a 23-22 lead but two straight points by Mid-Pacific put the visitors in control. The Eagles went on to stave off set point multiple times and scored the final three points after a service error and back-to-back hitting errors by the Owls.
The visitors got off to a 4-0 lead to start the third set and never looked back. They continued to build their lead after three straight aces by Sava Miocinovic and led by as many as 19-11 after Rye Nicholson was on a block for the Owls. HBA got as close as 23-20 after an overpass kill by Mokan before Mid-Pacific took the set.
HBA was the better team in the fourth set as they started to pull away when Joseph Giles and Longfellow joined in a block to give the Eagles a 11-7 lead that forced a Mid-Pacific timeout. A kill by Longfellow forced another timeout with HBA leading 20-14. HBA eventually ended the match on a Mokan kill down the line.
