Morisaki clutched up in relief role for Cougars; Seariders' Ioane continues stellar season

Kanoa Morisaki

Kaiser baseball  •   #1    Senior

Kanoa Morisaki isn't one to back down from a challenge. That's evident from his two seasons on the Kaiser baseball team and certainly from his most recent outing.

The 5-foot-10 Morisaki played a key part in the Cougars' thrilling 5-4 win over host Castle Saturday afternoon. Morisaki pitched seven scoreless innings of no-hit ball and registered 10 strikeouts without allowing a walk. He also reached base three times via a single and two base-on-balls.

"We didn't realize he ended up at seven innings with 10 strikeouts, but he just did an unbelievable job keeping them off the bases," Kaiser coach Josh Halemanu said.

Morisaki fired 58 of his 80 total pitches for strikes. He took over for starter Bryson Toner, who allowed four runs (three earned) in three innings of work. Morisaki eventually gave way to Taylin Oana, who recorded the final three outs after the Cougars pulled ahead with a single run in the top of the 11th innings.

"We got all the faith in the world in Taylin, but when a kid is that hot, it's like, ‘Should we go one (inning) more with him?,' but we try to draw a line with the numbers," Halemanu disclosed.

Halemanu also noted that had an extended outing against Roosevelt a few weeks prior, in which he threw 88 pitches over 5 1/3 innings; Morisaki also logged 10 strikeouts in the 7-4 win over the Rough Riders.

"We needed that win and the hard part is (Morisaki) doesn't want to come out. He'll argue with you to stay in, but we gotta look into his future, so actually I had to lie to him," Halemanu laughed. "I had to tell him he was at 90-something pitches and he had to come out. He made a big deal to me about it later, but I had to get him out, but he's just a competitor."

In between his outings against Roosevelt and Castle, Morisaki recorded an eight-strikeout game in a 9-0 win over then-unbeaten Kailua on March 30th. Morisaki threw 101 pitches over six innings and allowed four hits with three walks in the victory.

"He struggled a little bit in his first game against Farrington. I think he was trying to do too much, but his maturity as a senior has settled him down and he just wants the ball in the big games. He understood that Roosevelt game was a big game for us and then he goes into that Kailua game understanding that they're the top team at the moment and he wanted the ball. Castle was another big game, so all three games he understood the magnitude of the game and he wanted the ball, so he's pretty big right now," Halemanu said.

Morisaki's repertoire includes just three pitches (fast ball, curve, change-up), but his command and ability to throw any pitch in any count has kept hitters off balance.

"He's around 86 to 88 (miles per hour), but he's one of those guys that I think the ball just gets on you. His velocity is like everybody else, but he's just got something that it gets by everybody, it's hard to explain, but he's able to control all three pitches for strikes so it makes him very dangerous and sometimes he just reaches in that bag and gets a little extra, so he just competes," Halemanu added.

Morisaki has a 2-0 record with an earned run average of 1.03 this season. In 20 1/3 innings of work, he has allowed nine hits with 31 strikeouts against only three walks. Halemanu, for one, isn't surprised by the statistics given the sweat equity that Morisaki has put in since he first joined the team as a junior last year. Morisaki moved from southern California with his dad, who had previously attended the University of Hawaii.

"His dad just fell in love with the culture and he wanted Kanoa to learn about this culture, but from the time he came to now, you just see steady growth in him as a player. He works as hard as anybody out there. He's the guy that when we don't have practice, he's showing up somewhere to workout. My kid plays at Hawaii Kai District Park and he's always over there, putting in extra work," Halemanu said.

Aside from his prowess on the mound, Morisaki also doubles as the Cougars' three-hole hitter. He has put together a .333 batting average with a team-leading four home runs.

"Knowing that he has that power, he kind of gives us a little of that fear in that lineup where teams are gonna have to respect us a little bit, especially with our top two hitters, Taylin (Oana) and Zach (Ho). They're getting on base and their on-base percentage is really high, so as long as they set the tone, now you got Kanoa coming up, at least it puts a little fear in people and then Kade Hue is a really solid clean-up hitter behind him, so just those four kind of sets the tone for the game. If they get hot, we usually end up on the better end," Halemanu said.

When he's not pitching, the switch-hitting Morisaki will typically align as a middle infielder.

"He's gonna make that routine play. He's fundamentally sound, but what I think will stand out to everybody, as far as whoever he's playing, is you can see his competitiveness. He's not gonna be yelling or anything like that, but just his demeanor. He's a hard worker and is just always ready to go play and ready to compete," Halemanu expressed.

Morisaki just picked up a scholarship offer from Cal State Bakersfield, which wrapped up a Big West Conference series against the University of Hawaii over the weekend.

"I'm happy for him because he's been putting in the work and it's paying off for him now. I mean, the numbers that he's putting up for us is just unbelievable and it's great that others are taking notice of it, too," Halemanu said.

Kaiser has won its last three games after a 2-3 start to the regular season.

Morisaki and the Cougars (5-3) continue OIA Division I East play at Moanalua Wednesday.

Moani Ioane

Waianae softball  •   #20  INF/P  Senior

The prep softball season has been a happy homecoming to say the least for Moani Ioane.

Since transferring from Kapolei in the offseason, the Waianae slugger has put together a most memorable senior campaign to date. Ioane, a 5-foot-7 left fielder for the Seasiders, ranks among the state's leader in numerous offensive categories.

Ioane's statistics read like a video game. Her batting average of .625 to start the week leads all OIA Division I players. She is tied for second in runs batted in (19), tied for second in home runs (6), tied for third in doubles (5), tied for third in runs scored (19) and third in total hits (20).

To be sure, Tiani Hensley has been thrilled by Ioane's addition to her team. The Waianae coach was in the opposing dugout from Ioane a year ago, when the then-Kapolei junior hit .481 with nine home runs, 20 RBI and 16 runs scored.

That's why Hensley isn't at all surprised by the stellar season Ioane has put together this spring.

"Watching Moani play, I wouldn't have expected it to go any other way, (but) she looks good in red and blue," Hensley joked.

Ioane earned All-Hawaii First Team recognition and helped the Hurricanes go 13-3 and capture a league championship. However, she, along with standout pitcher Jerzie Liana, took their talents to Waianae; Both Ioane and Liana, the reigning All-OIA West Player of the Year, are signed with Big West Conference-member Cal State Northridge.

"Mo comes to practice and works every day," Hensley said. "She's embracing her time as a senior in her hometown. She loves being on the field and she loves the softball atmosphere."

Despite her long list of accolades, Ioane has brought a humble approach to her new teammates.

"Mo has had a huge impact in our lineup as our No. 3 batter, (but) ever since the first practice, she never presented herself as being better than anyone else. She has been very humble and helpful to everyone on the team and she leads by example. Jerzie and Mo together have had a huge impact on both sides, defense and offense," Hensley said.

Ioane haș been prolific with the bat, without question. She has hit safety in Waianae's first nine games, including six multi-hit games. Ioane has recorded a pair of four-hit games (both in wins over Leilehua). She has twice swatted two homers in a game, including a seven-RBI day against the Mules on March 30th.

"The first time I seen Moani hit, I was blown away," Hensley recalled. "The amount of power this girl brings to the plate is like only a few I've seen before in high school softball. Her ground balls, line drives and fly balls are coming in hot. Her hitting is her biggest strength, (but) she will find a way to get on that base. She knows that she just needs to make solid contact and if a home run comes, it comes and if she has to get on base with a bunt, she is open and willing."

Not only does Ioane possess some serious power in her bat, Hensley also pointed out that her plate discipline is also superb.

"Moani is very disciplined in the box. She knows what she wants and when a strike is called that's not quite a strike, her face is priceless," Hensley laughed.

Kidding aside, Hensley reiterated that Ioane doesn't ever try to do too much at the plate.

"If her pitch presents itself, she will take it where it needs to go and if she has to run the count, she did also do that. She's a well-rounded hitter. Where you pitch it, she will hit it and she will hit it hard, but she's also willing to take the walk," Hensley said.

It's that type of buy-in that has easily endeared Ioane to her teammates and coaches alike.

"She's a team player and will do what is best for the team. Mo has this spunky playfulness to her when she's on the field, but she's a very respectful player. She's always willing to help the girls on the team if they are struggling and is always one of the first to help set up and take down gear, making sure we have everything," Hensley noted.

Ioane posted another pair of multi-hit games in wins over Kapolei and Pearl City last week. She went 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs batted in and two runs scored in a 13-0 win over the Hurricanes Thursday. In Saturday's 11-0 rout of the Chargers, Ioane was 2 for 2 with two doubles; She drove in two runs and scored twice.

"She looks where the runners are and if she needs to move them over, she will get that base hit or sac fly and if we need runs, she will clutch up and hit the girls in. She's very passionate about the game and she's willing to give her all in every piece of the game. She's someone we can count on because she's not going down without a fight," Hensley said.

Hensley also expressed her appreciation for the defense that Ioane provides mostly in left field — although she has seen some time at third base as well.

"She knows how to get the job done in the outfield. It might not be fancy and out there, but she does what needs to be done, no extras added," Hensley said.

Waianae, the No. 2 team in the ScoringLive Power Rankings, saw its four-game win streak end with its 4-2 loss to No. 1 Campbell Tuesday night to close out the regular season.

Ioane and the Seariders (8-2) will be the second-seeded team out of the West in next week's 12-team OIA Division I tournament. They will have a first-round bye into the tournament quarterfinals.
