Kochi dominating at the plate for Mililani; Boyles sparked Pearl City's first victory

Mililani softball  •   #26  1B  Junior

Hard work is starting to pay off for Kolbi Kochi.

The Mililani junior went 7-for-8 at the plate and scored seven runs while tallying six RBIs for the third-ranked Trojans in wins over Leilehua and Kapolei last week. Her final hit of the week was in walk-off fashion, a first-pitch home run to give Mililani a 14-13 victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday.

"She's real confident up there," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said of Kochi. "She's just seeing the ball really well and she's getting hard hits each time at bat. She's just going out there and if that's her pitch, she's just swinging. That's Kolbi. Every at bat, she's going to make quality."

Kochi, who starts at first base, is currently batting .769 and leads the Trojans (3-1) in every major batting category through four regular season games. She also has a home run in every contest.

"Right now she's hitting, outstanding thus far," Antonio said. "She's hard-working, great work ethic. She works hard at practice and she goes home and puts in more work at home. Great kid."

Antonio added that Kochi has her own batting cage set up at home in her backyard.

"At times when she maybe didn't have a good day at the plate, she'll go home and take swings and try to perfect her swing."

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic denied Kochi of a freshman prep season, she found ways to get reps. Kochi represented Team Japan in the Triple Crown International Challenge during the past two summers and have participated in various tournaments during the fall season on the mainland. She also has aspirations to play collegiately, giving a verbal commitment to the University of Hawaii earlier this year.

"Her dedication, commitment and passion for the game, that's what she strives for," said Antonio. "She deserves everything that's coming her way right now."

While her offense against the Hurricanes was the headline, her defense was what set the tone early on as she was involved in the first three outs of the game. Kochi's most impressive play was when she was in on a 9-3-2 relay to pick up the second out of the half-inning. After receiving the throw from right fielder Rylie Madariaga, she fired a throw to home so that catcher Kaui Garcia could get an over-eagar runner out to keep the board scoreless.

The game would remain at 0-0 until the bottom of the third when Kochi hit a hard ground ball to left field to score Ciana Cubi and Taryn Hirano for the first runs of the game.

Antonio said it was nice to see after leaving runners on base in their previous contests.

"That is huge because when you get on the board, it feels good," said Antonio. "We were talking to the kids that we are hitting the ball hard and we're putting it in play so all we have to do is put it in play and for Kolbi, she wasn't over swinging at all. We can manufacture runs that way, don't over swing. Just look for that small hit and that's totally it. She's been real clutch for us."

The two teams traded runs after Mililani took a 2-0 lead, with Kapolei going up 4-2 after the top of the fourth only for the Trojans to lead 7-4 heading into the fifth. Kochi didn't do much in the fourth inning, but she did draw an intentional walk to load the bases before Garcia has a grand slam to give Mililani a three-run advantage.

The Hurricanes then scored eight straight runs across the next two innings to hold a 12-7 advantage after the middle of the sixth.

Mililani sent the top of the lineup at the start of the bottom of the frame with a leadoff triple by Taryn Hirano and a single Kamryn Aoki. Kochi did her job as a three-hole hitter to extend the inning, getting a single to score Hirano and later scoring on a double by Taeialee Simanu as the Trojans pushed six runs across the plate in the frame to take a 13-12 lead heading into the seventh.

Kapolei managed to tie it in the top of the seventh, but was limited to just one run after Kochi ended the threat when she caught a pop out for the final out with the bases loaded.

Kochi also ended the game on her solo homer in the bottom of the frame.

"She just took that first pitch and it went," Antonio said of Kochi's game-winner. "If it was good, she's going to swing. She's really been disciplined overall this year. She's just looking for her pitch and that's what's helping her."

Two days prior to beating the Hurricanes, Kochi and the Trojans bested Leilehua, 18-6, in a six-inning affair. Kochi went 3-for-4 against the Mules, scoring four runs with two RBIs on a double and a home run.

"We were supposed to play them Tuesday, but it rained out so they postponed it till Thursday," Antonio said of the matchup against Leilehua. "Kolbi had a home run as well. She's just been taking some hacks… and swinging. Those hits fall through and we score runs if there's runners on base."

Antonio noted that spring break would normally be a time when players lose focus, but said that this year's squad is different.

"They always back each other up, cheer for each other. This year's team, they're very close and together. They motivate each other. If our pitcher maybe has two balls in a row, Kolbi will run to the pitcher and say ‘come on, let's go,' I see her doing that, encouraging her teammates or maybe just making them laugh so they relax or something."

Kochi and the Trojans will take the field next in a home game against top-ranked Campbell Tuesday afternoon in a 3 p.m. contest.

Drew Boyles

Pearl City baseball  •   #4  INF/P  Senior

When Drew Boyles is on, no one is stopping him.

The Pearl City senior went 4-for-4 at the plate and was the winning pitcher for the Chargers in their first victory of the regular season, a 17-2 road win over Kapolei last Saturday.

Boyles added two doubles and two RBIs in the contest while throwing four strikeouts and allowing just one hit in three innings of work.

It was a much-needed win for a Pearl City team that lost its first three games to start league play, a far cry from the squad that reached the OIA Division I final a season ago.

"The first three losses we couldn't put it together and we must have left 30 guys on the base for all I know," said first-year Pearl City coach Gary Miyama, a longtime assistant before taking over for Wes Yonamine in the offseason.

"We really didn't hit the ball well and when we can't throw strikes we're not going to be any good. Then Drew comes along and boom, boom, boom, he starts throwing strikes. When that kid's on, he's tough to hit. Then our bats started to break out. That was a good win. We really needed that."

The Chargers (1-3) had everything going for them early against the Hurricanes. Boyles recorded a base hit with a full count to help Pearl City take a 4-0 lead after the opening half-inning.

Kapolei tried to get Boyles rattled early with a drag bunt to start the game, but the Pearl City senior was able to make a play on the ball to record the first out. Boyles then recorded a swinging strikeout after an eight-pitch battle with Ezra Kanakaole to end the inning.

"If he starts like that, he's good," Miyama said of Boyles' performance on the mound. "Sometimes he'll have one or two innings where he runs into trouble, but this one everything was working because from the start he was good."

The Chargers kept the momentum going in the second inning with a three runs in the frame. Boyles' second hit of the game went for a double to score Lennon Elder to give Pearl City a 7-0 lead.

"He's always been able to hit the ball," Miyama said of Boyles. "That's why I keep saying when we break out, we're going to break out big because in practice everybody is hitting the ball… and Drew, his power is right-center. When he hits the ball like he can and how he should, he'll hit the ball line drive into the gap."

Boyles continued his strong performance on the mound, getting a swinging strikeout against Skyden Muromachi after giving up a double, his only hit allowed in the game.

By then, Boyles was in the zone. He recorded his third strikeout to start the bottom of the third, but this time he got the batter looking. The Pearl City senior's arsenal of pitches got Brock Pamatigan guessing as he didn't attempt any swings on the pitches thrown inside of the strike zone.

"His best pitch is his curveball and his change-up," Miyama said of Boyles. "When those are working, those are tough to hit. His fast ball and if he keeps it down is great too."

Miyama noted that it took some adjustment on Boyles' part to be successful. Boyles, a fiery competitor, tends to fall in love with his fast ball.

"His dad (Eric) has been working with him too. Eric got on his case on too many fast balls in the Aiea game. Drew then started to throw more curve balls and off-speed stuff and mixing in the fast ball. When he does that, he's tough to hit, but when he's throwing fast balls, anybody is going to hit you eventually."

Miyama also credited catcher Zechariah Takahashi in calling a great game behind the plate.

"They mixed the pitches up well and Kapolei couldn't sit on the fast ball."

Boyles could have gone more innings if the team needed to, but he was dealing with a blister on his throwing hand. He still managed to get two more hits at the plate to complement his overall solid performance.

"Everything is starting to turn around and Drew stepping up has been a real big plus for us," said Miyama.

Like he was on Saturday, Boyles has been a key leader for the Chargers all season.

"He's doing pretty well," said Miyama. "Before every practice, it's like we kind of wait to see who takes charge and he's been stepping up, telling guys ‘let's get going'. In the game he's constantly telling them ‘you got to stay in the game. Even though we're losing, you got to stay in the game.' He's taking a pretty good leadership role as far as I see. The kids listen to him."

Boyles gave a verbal commitment as a preferred walk-on at the University of Hawaii, but also has has an offer to play at Southwest Oregon.

The Pearl City senior and the Chargers will next take the field when they host Leilehua Wednesday in a 3 p.m. contest.
