Lau Kong off to smashing start for Raiders; Souza's 2-way contributions add up for Na Alii

Kaimana Lau Kong

Iolani baseball  •   #19  INF/OF  Sophomore

For Kaimana Lau Kong, actions speak louder than words.

The play of the Iolani sophomore has spoke volumes early on this prep baseball season. After the first week of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season, the 6-foot-6 Lau Kong has recorded multi-hit games in each of the Raiders' first three games.

"We're happy with the start," Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira said of the second-year starter.

Entering the week Lau Kong was batting .667 with five runs batted in and four runs scored. Three of his six hits have gone for extra bases, including a home run and a double Saturday afternoon to lead the Raiders in a 10-4 win over Kamehameha.

Lau Kong's first-inning RBI-double gave his team an early lead.

"He had two strikes, but he battled and he hit the ball the other way," Miyahira recalled.

After he grounded out in his next at-bat to end the bottom of the second inning, Lau Kong led off the home half of the fourth with a solo homer over the fence in left field to extend the lead to 8-1.

"We gave up one run the half-inning before that and getting that run back was big for us against a team like Kamehameha that's always dangerous, so there's no lead that's safe," Miyahira added.

Lau Kong drew a walk in his final place appearance. Miyahira noted that Lau Kong's pitch selection has improved since his freshman campaign a year ago. He hit .275 in his debut season and finished with a team-high 17 RBIs for the ILH runner-up Raiders.

"I think his at-bats are maturing. The most impressive thing about that game was his last (plate appearance), he drew that walk, we pinch ran for him and that runner ended up scoring. It just shows a lot of maturity for a guy who had a pretty successful day at the place, he kind of battled and drew the walk and that run ended up scoring and I think things like that are big for our team," Miyahira said. "I know the doubles and home runs look great in the box score, but it's those little things that help our ball club."

In the ILH opener last Tuesday — a 3-2 loss to Punahou — Lau Kong batted 2 for 4 with a home run. Two days later he went 2 for 2 at the plate with a couple of RBIs and two runs scored in a 10-1 win over Damien.

"I think with Mana, a lot of it is hard work — I think the majority is hard work," Miyahira expressed. "He is blessed with some ability, but credit to him for just working hard and just competing. I guess I would describe him as a quiet guy who just does his work, does his job. Not a big ‘rah-rah' guy, just a quiet guy who leads by example."

Miyahira expounded on upon the silent work ethic of the left fielder.

"He just kind of shows up, does his work, does his job. He's not a distraction, his teammates like him — he keeps it pretty loose, too — he's a sneaky funny guy, but he puts in the work. He works, shows up, works, puts his head down and just works and I'm excited to see what his future brings," Miyahira said.

Lau Kong, who leads the Raiders in every major offensive statistical category, can also play shortstop or third base on the infield and even saw some time on the mound last year.

"He definitely can pitch, so he is an option for us in a relief role," said Miyahira, who pointed out that Lau Kong is also pretty slick with the glove in addition to his hitting prowess.

"I think his defensive ability is very underrated. I think he's got a pretty good arm — the ball has a lot of carry to it and it skips off the ground well — and I think as he grows into his body, it's going to develop into a plus-arm. As he continues to grow and mature, he'll become a better athlete, but I think his defense is very underrated," Miyahira said.

The right-handed Lau Kong can also get it done defensively in center field. No matter where he is on the field, Lau Kong is almost assuredly in the everyday lineup, typically batting in the three-hole.

"We don't expect anything more out of him than he can do, but I think what he does well is he never gets too high or too low, he just keeps plugging away and I think it keeps the guys loose," Miyahira said.

He went on, "He's a pretty happy-go-lucky guy and I think his knowledge of the game is pretty underrated because he's got a pretty good baseball IQ, but he just has to continue to be the best version of himself and just try and get better every single day. Just worry about what he can control and just continue to be a great teammate. Baseball is a tough game, so he's just gotta keep playing and handle the highs, handle the lows and just keep playing."

Miyahira credits Lau Kong's competitive and athleticism for being able to make a quick transition from basketball season in the winter to baseball in the spring a seemingly seamless one.

"I think that is just the competitive spirit in him to just compete no matter what he is doing. He's always working, constantly putting in the work even in the offseason, just hitting," Miyahira said. "He's a great kid and the coaches and players enjoy having him around."

Iolani, the No. 4 team in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings, saw its modest two-game win streak come to an end Tuesday with a 4-1 loss to No. 3 Saint Louis.

"Our team has been battling," Miyahira said. "They show up to work every day and get after it and I'm proud of them — all of our kids and Mana is one of them — they're all enjoyable to be around."

Lau Kong and the Raiders (2-2) will look to get back in the win column when they take on No. 7 PAC-5 Thursday, 3:30 p.m. at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park field No. 1. They close out the week at home Saturday at 9 a.m. against Mid-Pacific.

Taja Souza

Aiea softball  •   #11  P/OF/INF  Sophomore

Taja Souza might be small in stature, but the Aiea sophomore is making it clear that she's a big-time player on the diamond.

The 5-foot-2 Souza, a right-handed pitcher and third batter in the lineup for Na Alii, is off to a hot start this softball season. Through her team's first five games, Souza is batting an even .500 (5 for 10) with four runs batted in and seven runs scored. In the pitching circle, she is 2-0 on the year with a earned run average of 1.11. Souza has allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 12 2/3 innings of work.

"What makes her special is her reliability," Aiea coach Alan Higuchi said of the second-year starter.

In addition to her pitching duties, Souza also provides solid defense in the outfield and occasionally at second base.

"She makes the routine plays wherever we put her. Whether it's infield, outfield, she's kind of like a steady Eddie, somebody you can rely on no matter where we put them to make the routine plays," Higuchi added.

Much of her ability to remain cool under pressure can be traced to Souza's demeanor, her coach explained.

"As far as pitching, she's very even-keel — stoic even — where you cannot really tell what the score is because she has the same expression all the time and she doesn't get too high or too low, which is great in softball and baseball because there's a lot of failures," Higuchi said. "With Taja, you can't really tell if she's doing great or struggling. She always has the same personality, kind of low-key, doesn't really get very excited if she's doing well or not."

In a 10-5 win over Radford to open the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II season on March 2, Souza allowed two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks in five innings of work to get the win. At the plate, she batted 2 for 3 with two walks and an RBI.

Souza's next appearance came in relief in a 10-0 win over Kalaheo last Tuesday, when she notched a pair of strikeouts in 1 2/3 perfect innings pitched. Souza had four strikeouts in two innings of work in a rout of Kahuku two days later; She reached base in all four of her plate appearances against the Red Raiders, including three walks, a stolen base, one RBI and three runs scored.

"A lot of the wins were team wins. We had some people injured, some academic situations with other girls stepping up and by them stepping up, enhanced our team's success. Taja and a bunch of the other players, some of our core girls have been stepping up early in the season. We had some players missing here and there for whatever reasons, but she was the steady Eddie," Higuchi described. "Always dedicated and committed to the team and shows up every practice."

Souza, who was tabbed All-OIA D2 First Team and All-Hawaii Honorable Mention as a freshman, enjoyed her best outing of the young season Saturday afternoon, when she logged four innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts and no walks in a five-inning win over McKinley.

"She made quality pitches and so the strikeouts are going to come. The McKinley game she was really hitting her spots, keeping the ball down, spinning the ball in and out and keeping them off-balanced with a change-up," Higuchi said. "She's not a power pitcher who is going to strike out ten batters a game, but if she hits her spots, she's capable of expanding the zone in and out."

Additionally, Souza paired extra-base hits with a triple, double, two RBIs and two runs scored. She also upped her walk total to seven on the year and was hit by a pitch in the 13-0 win over Tigers.

"She's become more consistent with her hitting and as with any three-hour hitter, you want somebody to get on base, hit for average and she uses the whole field. The other thing is she has a great work ethic — she's always working hard — a coach's player in a sense that she's very attentive, very compliant to whatever instructions are given," Higuchi added.

Higuchi describes Souza, an avid weight lifter, as soft spoken, mellow and respectful in nature.

"She kind of takes on the personality of the dad (Alfred), who I've known for a while. She's pretty much the same way. Taja is a quiet leader with a great work ethic and just a very humble girl," Higuchi said.

For what Souza lacks in height, she more than makes up for it with work ethic and competitiveness and the statistics certainly back that up.

"I think the numbers, it is what it is and it reflects her consistency being above average in the stats and it shows with her abilities and hopefully everybody will follow her lead," Higuchi said.

Souza, one of several team co-captains, was 0 for 1 and was hit by a pitch and scored two runs in Aiea's 18-2 win over Waipahu Tuesday afternoon.

"Having opportunities to go against tough competition is always a great thing for our team, to see how we match up and compete against the competitive teams is great for our team to evaluate ourselves and see what we can do against those particular pitchers and batters," Higuchi said.

Na Alii (5-0) next play Friday against Farrington, 3 p.m. at Lanakila District Park before a showdown against fellow-unbeaten Nanakuli (4-0) next Thursday.
