Davis, Lewis carry Roosevelt past Waipahu in OIA playoff opener

Kainalu Davis and Kayman Lewis combined to score 40 points to lift Roosevelt past Waipahu, 60-52 in the opening round of the OIA Division I playoffs Thursday.

Davis and Lewis each scored 20 points to help the Rough Riders improve to 8-3 and advance to face the West Division's top seed, Mililani (10-0) in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

"Kayman's got to score and Nalu has to rebound. Kayman for the most part scores 30-40 percent on the year. I need him to take shots. Everyone else has to know their role. Nalu attacks the hoop and we're fine," Roosevelt Steve Hathaway said.

Amadeus Browning contributed nine and brother Mateo added five.

"I want Mateo to shoot more and Ama, this is his first year playing with us, he's a baseball kid. He's tough and he's one of our best rebounders," Hathway said of the Brownings.

Adonys Hill scored a team-high 18 points and drained four 3-pointers but the Marauders end their season at 5-6. Noah Raping and Robinson Loli each added eight.

The Rough Riders got off to a slow start and trailed early before scoring the next five points to close out the first quarter. Lewis found Davis to beat the buzzer to take a 13-9 lead.

"Just a lot of fakes. Just fake one and make one, that's coach Steve's motto. Once they leave us open it's going to go in," Davis said.

Roosevelt extended the lead to seven in the second quarter off of Davis' bank shot and held that lead going into the half after Lewis' shot fell to make it, 22-15.

"Just play for each other and play for the seniors because this could be the last game-ever in this gym," Lewis said of the message at halftime.

Lewis and Davis in that order combined to score the third quarter's opening points to extend the lead to double digits.

"We trust our teammates and we had good ball screens for open looks at the basket," Davis said.

"The rim seemed bigger and our energy went up. The first half our energy was low. On defense we weren't talking that much. I was telling the team we have to talk on defense because it's going to win the game," Lewis said.

Hill fired back hitting consecutive 3-pointers on their next offensive possessions and Noah Raping scored off a steal to bring Waipahu within five. Hill and Raping combined to score 13 of the team's 15 points in the third.

Davis extended the lead to eight with a 3-pointer that jumpstarted a 12-0 run to close out the period. Amadeus Browning converted the 3-point play after getting fouled in transition. Lewis added a floater and Mateo Browning with another bucket. Lewis hit a jumper before the buzzer to put Roosevelt up, 47-30 going into the fourth.

"We got some steals and we got some fast breaks. We went on a run. In the fourth, we let go of the gas. I had to remind them it wasn't over and we had to finish this," Lewis said.

"I think when they pressed us, we were able to beat it. Having five guards, once they pressed us we were able to beat that press and got some layups out of it," Hathaway said.

Waipahu trimmed the deficit and outscored Roosevelt, 22 to 13 in the fourth to eventually cut it down to single digits.

Winner of Mililani/Roosevelt advances to take on the winner of Kahuku/Leilehua in the semifinals on Monday. Losers of both games drop to the fifth-place elimination bracket.
