KAPOLEI — The Sledgehammer will stay with the Sabers.

No. 4 Campbell used a 21-point second quarter to surge past and pull away from sixth-ranked Kapolei, 38-19, before a crowd of about 1,000 fans at the Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex Saturday night.

The Sabers got 289 yards passing yards and four touchdowns from quarterback Jaron Sagapolutele to improve to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the OIA Open Division.

The Hurricanes were unable to hold onto an early lead and dropped their second straight game to fall to 5-2 and 2-2.

Sagapolutele, a sophomore quarterback, completed 21 of his 33 pass attempts and was not intercepted. All three of Campbell's trips to the end zone in the second stanza were via Sagapolutele's left arm.

Kapolei took its only lead of the game early in the second quarter, when Diezel Kamoku hauled in a perfectly-placed, over-the-shoulder toss from quarterback Liatama Amisone for a 9-yard touchdown. The ‘Canes couldn't get off the PAT and they held a 6-3 advantage.

It would not last, however. The Sabers marched 73 yards in just seven plays, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sagapolutele to wideout Mason Muaau, who used all of his 6-foot-5 frame to make a leaping, twisting reception that he initially bobbled, but was able to secure before he landed in the end zone.

Muaau was briefly down on the field and tended to by athletic trainers after he completed the TD grab — which came on a fourth-and-5 — but was able to walk off under his own power.

After Kapolei was forced to punt, Campbell began its ensuing possession at its own 19-yard line. On the very first play of the drive, Sagapolutele hit Jonah Togafau-Tavui on a post pattern and with no defenders ahead of him, the sophomore wide receiver went untouched for the 81-yard touchdown.

"Our called out that the safety was playing man (coverage), so coach was thinking of doing a corner-post, because the other safety was playing on the other side, so everything just went with it," said Togafau-Tavui, who finished with seven receptions for a season-high 170 yards.

The Hurricanes turned it over on their next drive and Campbell went 55 yards in 10 plays, culminating with Sagapolutele's second TD pass to Muaau, who made another spectacular grab on the play. Despite facing double-coverage, Muaau completed a one-handed catch with a right-handed snag of Sagapolutele's well-placed pass as he fell to the ground.

"That ball that I seen was a perfect ball," said Muaau, a Colorado State-commit. "I just gotta used to double-coverage — something new for me — last year it was mostly one-on-ones, but now it's double-coverage and I just gotta get used to it."

Sagapolutele threw to Togafau-Tavui for a successful two-point conversion and the Sabers took a 24-6 lead into halftime.

Kapolei got back into the game after it forced Campbell to punt on its opening possession out of the break and manufactured a 13-play, 76-yard drive that took more than four minutes off the clock and resulted in Amisone's 6-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal. Hurley Kennedy tacked on the extra point to cut it to 24-13 with 6:05 left in the third quarter.

Campbell's defense forced a three-and-out and a turnover on downs on Kapolei's next two drives and then got some separation with Chauncee Lopez's 2-yard TD run that was set-up one play earlier by a trick play. Sagapolutele pitched the ball backward to Togafau-Tavui, who pulled up and fired a pass deep for Lopez, who hauled in the 29-yard pass completion to convert on fourth-and-13.

Sagapolutele's final TD pass went to Rowen Bucao for seven yards with 4:06 to play. Cristian Wyckstandt added the PAT to give Campbell its largest lead of the night at 38-13.

Kapolei got a late touchdown on Amisone's 10-yard TD pass to Izaea Lino in the closing seconds.

Amisone finished 24-of-41 passing for 185 yards. Malachi Tapaoan and Kamoku led the ‘Canes receiving corps with seven catches apiece for 66 and 58 yards, respectively.

Kapolei was averaging 36 points and nearly 373 yards per game offensively entering the weekend, but was held to 285 yards of total offense and only 4.4 yards per pass attempt by the Sabers.

"We got a whole bunch of good guys in our secondary and we locked it down," said cornerback Malik Jackson, who recorded two of four pass break-ups.

Jackson, who also returned both kickoffs and punts Saturday night, said that the Sabers utilized a multitude of coverages against the ‘Canes and their sophomore gunslinger Amisone, including man-to-man and both cover-3 and cover-4 schemes, all while ensuring that the dual-threat quarterback's ability to scramble for big gains was accounted for.

"Oh yeah, we made sure we contained him," Jackson said of Amisone, the OIA's leading rusher in the Open Division.

Kapolei was only 3 of 12 on third downs, including 0 of 6 before halftime.

The game was hampered by penalties by both teams. The Hurricanes were flagged 14 times for 105 yards, while the Sabers drew 14 penalties for 133 yards.

With the win, the Sabers retain possession of the Sledgehammer Trophy, which is the perpetual award given to the winner of the rivalry game between the geographic rivals.

Campbell will look to ride the momentum into Friday's regular-season finale at Raymond Torii Field against No. 14 Waianae.

Kapolei will host No. 3 Mililani Saturday at the Nagasako Sports Complex, before it concludes the regular season against Leilehua on Oct. 14.
